So I took my diff down to Dr Smash and eric ended up replacing the bearings. He said the pinion bearings in particular looked horrible. Ok, cool... problem solved. NOT!!!!! Put the diff back in and nothing changed. The noise is still there at 35+mph and only at nuetral throttle when everything is in float.

Ok, maybe its the wheel bearings. Replaced both sets on each rear wheel. Nope! still there!

Ok, maybe its the T-case and it just sounds like its coming from the diff... So I take a garden hose and run it up next to the t-case, go for a drive, listen, and nothing!

Take the garden house, shove in the fancy little E-locker guard I built, and go for a drive. SOUNDS HORRIBLE. I actually stuck the hose up to my phone and recorded it...

So, its aboviously coming from the rear axle. Its not the wheel bearing cause replacing those did nothing. THe diff has new bearings and Eric (Dr. Smash) said that the R&P seemed to be ok. Is there something spinning in the e-locker assembly when just driving around in the street? What else could it be?

Ive pulled the axle apart 3 times this past week. I went through this with that aftermarket rover crap, and now th toyota stuff is doing it to me! I want to sell my truck more than ever right now and its only because of stupid aftermarket parts!!!!!!!!!!

Did you check the engagement fork? If it is out of "time" with the gears, it could be trying/tried to partially engage and that is the sound you are hearing.

Does it still engage/disengage? The collar that slides over to engage can break as well, but usually that is with big tires in rockcrawling scenarios.

Just a thought, there really isn't that much to go wrong with those.

Sorry to hear about the troubles.

Everything looked fine when I pulled the diff out. I lifted the rear of the truck up to see if it locks, and everything seems to be fine. The locker engages like it always has. Is there any way of taking the locker motor off and manualy engaging/disengaging the fork? I figure if I can do that, then I can manualy disengage it to make sure that it is all the way out when I go for another test drive.

I have the noise recorded on my phone, I just wish I knew how to post it on here! it says its in "amr" format, if that means anything...

sorry about the angry first post too. you can tell I just got back from the test drive when i posted that!

Yep. When I first did my gears, I didn't get the front fork moved over (disengaged) enough (the motor and everything was removed for the gear install). The front 80 diff is built the same way as the Taco rear. Anyway the front was locked up, so I had to take the motor off, push the engagement fork the rest of the way over (fully disengaged), put the motor back in. Been working great every since.

I fully understand the anger.

Ok, sounds good. I was planning on taking the motor off tomorrow.

it seems to only be 3 bolts....

Toyota Tacoma Elocker Actuator Repair

did you just take something like a screw driver and slide the fork over after the motor was off?

keeping my fingers crossed that the collar is just barely touching!

thanks Jack

Should only be 3 bolts.

Yep, used a screw driver. Not sure how or why yours could have gotten out of "time" but I guess anything is possible.

Good luck.

Took the motor off today, and everything seems ok. The fork was all the way over to the side like it should be. Went out for a test drive afterwards and the noise is still there.

Sorry, but I have no other idea what it could be. If the gears are fine, the bearings are new/good, the motor is fully disengaging/engaging the fork/collar, then I don't know what else it could be. So add me to the confused.:confused:

Maybe a dumb question, but you checked inside of the housing for anything loose in there!?
Like a nut or something?
ANY POSSIBILITY that your dx tool was off and it COULD be something other than the rear axle/ housing?

Nope, no loose bolts... The rover housing is pretty plain inside. The only bolts in there are the ones I welded in for the diff. The diff, and four wheel bearings is pretty much the only thing going on in there.

It could be the t case, but I don't think so. I'm going to have a friend who's a rover tech check it out this week.

I wish I could find another diff, but that would still be really expensive.... :(
