A couple of days ago I noticed my Cruiser was making a strange noise. I couldn't figure exactly where it was coming from or what it could be, so I took it to Rob'e Mans this morning for them to take a look. They concluded that my water pump was failing and needed to be replaced. I've got around 166K on the truck, and when I bought it, the shop felt pretty good that the timing belt/water pump servicing had been done, but we had no proof. As such, I decided to go ahead and get the whole timing belt servicing done since, if the previous owner had done it, it would need to be done in the next year or so anyways. Fortunately I have the money in the bank for it. I'm also getting them to replace my heater T's, especially after seeing Eric's break this past weekend. Not exactly awesome news, but I'll be glad to for the peace of mind once everything is done.

So Mons Venus changed your timing belt but not the water pump? And suggested not to change it? I'm a little confused.
And you're taking it back to them?

No, sorry, perhaps my wording was confusing. When I bought it, I took it to them for a pre-purchase inspection. There was no sticker indicating a timing belt change, and I did not have any service records. Based on the appearance on the water pump and the timing belt, it was their opinion that they were likely not the originals, and that the timing belt servicing probably had been performed at some point. So, now that the water pump is failing, I opted to get the whole timing belt servicing instead of just doing a new water pump.

If you can not find any number markings (usually a sharpie marking somewhere under the hood), and neither can a mechanic, and your water pump is failing. I would throw a hunnerd doll hairs on it that there hasn't been a replacement done. These 4.7's have been breaking timing belts in the 150-ish mileage cause they've never been done. And it breaks the motor. A friend down at TAPCO was looking for one the other month for this very reason. Another friend sees the Tundra's at auction with boat anchors cause the timing belt has broke. Time frame for these 4.7's to blow.

So, long story short, good for you taking care of it. Just remember the date and mileage. Record it under the hood in an obvious place for anyone to see.

It didn't break my motor..

Yea in the 100 forum there has been a long discussion of interference vs non-interference but I only recall one s*** motor which was higher rpm's and multiple attempts to start afterwards. The rest were replace belt, etc and move on.

I can give you numbers to people who see it weekly. I'm not even going to open the 100 forum, cause I see my doctors too much already.

Someone once tried explaining it to me about the 4.7 cause it's different apparently. I'm not sure. I just know that it's already left me stranded ON the trail twice and I ain't owned it more than 6 months.

J replaced my mom's camry 4cyl timing belt last week. She broke hers but it's definitely non-interference.

I spun the cams at top dead center then turned the crank 90 degrees and spun them again; I repeated at 180 degrees. We're the valves just kissing the pistons? I don't know but I felt no interference at all. It was my theory that the 4.7s in the cruisers are different than the others. The cruiser engines are made in Japan and the others are made in the U.S. ( Alabama?).
That was just a guess though. I'm still not sure I like the 100 but every time I work on it it Impresses me. It is what's right for the family though.

What happened on the trail and what broke?

People who see land cruiser 4.7s blow up after timing belt breaks weekly?

No, I was exaggerating. And most 4.7's are in the Tundra anyway. It's a tough tough tough motor. But folks have run a lot of these Tundra's ragged. If he see's a Tundra at auction he usually buys it.

The hard pipe under the intake was not secured by the retaining bolt. So the pressure fitting blew off in Hot Springs. @dnp and Rob warned me to replace thos two heater "T" connectors in the back because they said they would blow if original.

And one blew last week on a moderate trail up at AOP. LOL.
