Hi

I have a canvas canopy on my 79 pick-up, but the stuff at the back gets covered with dust on our roads and since the canopy is fixed by eyelets and bungie cord to the sides, sealing is not an option.

Any other ideas?

Thanks and regards

Long miles on dry, dusty roads will eventually cover the contents of the bed with a layer of dust. In my experience even enclosed SUVs will suffer this to some extent.

A second tarp over the interior contents that can be removed once at your destination is one option. Some sort of air deflector on the top rear of the canopy that would direct airflow from the top down toward the ground might prevent dust from being circulated back toward the truck could help. I'd think you would need to be traveling at a fairly good clip to be functional.

Thanks Numby

Right now I am using another tarp inside to keep the bedding relative dust free, but I was wondering about some form of ventilation to keep positve pressure inside, but you are right about the dust.It will come in anyway. THe ventilation will probably let in rain as well. It does happen here every now and then

Cheers

Basie,

If you get a vehicle trimmer to put 1 or 2 square holes (maybe 100 / 150mm square) with a flyscreen mesh sewn into the holes and then a cover, as you travel you will get desired effect. It is quite common in Oz.
Don,t know if you have a well body or a trayback but on my trayback I used double sided tape or a type of door seal on the bottom of the removable sides that worked very well even keeping water out from high pressure hose's.

Can you post up a pic? Not visualizing it very well.

I've had good luck using drybags to keep dust out. You know, that things that whitewater rafters use to stow their gear? Dust is like water, except it doesn't evaporate...

I had this vent in the old canvas. It kept the dust out quite well, even after a 2200 klm desert drive on dirt roads.
I only had one but some have them on both sides.
In winter you just press the flap onto the velco tabs to keep out the rain
Throwing a tarp or old blanket over every thing inside is still a good back up.

In Austrailia they have the same problems with dust (search for bull dust) and I've seen mention of dust filters specifically for supplying fresh air to vehicle cabins. They are usually roof mounted with their air intake as high as possible. They have a filter, and a electric blower. I know they have been mentioned over at the Expedition Portal site.
