Anyone have trouble getting theirs off? Mine dont want to come off, not sure how hard I should "tap" on them but I have been banging on them pretty good with no luck. Tried tapping around the seam with a sharp ended punch and sledge hammer as well as just hitting around the outer face. Are there any other tricks or tips?
Couple different ways.... you could grab it with channel locks and use a hammer to whack the channel locks in the direction you're pulling. Or, use the screwdriver method but prying them off like that could be difficult. I've even used a chisel and hammer. The FSM says don't reuse them, but if you don't destroy it, I just reuse the same one.
In either case, the proper size screw driver does the job. On the dust cap on the hub, just take a thin screw driver and a smaller hammer to tap it in and pry it off. Totally reusable; never had to replace one.
It's not a challenge....you just have to use the proper tool and technique ! : )
Don't know what you're diving into, but lots of more tricky items in there...
I have an old wood chisel I use that has a much sharper edge than a screwdriver and it works really well. It doesn't dig into them like a screw driver that has a blunt end. I also just bought replacements because the PO beat them up pretty well so next time I have them off, on go the new ones. They are only a couple of bucks a piece so next time you order parts just add a couple in if you need them. Also, buy a few locking plates for the nuts while you are at it and a couple of drive flange gaskets. They are cheap and It's good to have spare parts on hand.
