I've got a 1991 LJ78 Prado, and have allready put a A/M mechanical water temp gauge, a pyro is in the works, I've installed the vac/boost gauge, and now I want to run higher boost.

Does anyone know where to tap in a dual stage manual boost controller, and if a Turbo XS unit will work on this engine.

I want to run around 14psi, squeeze a little more power out of her

I've heard of shiming the wastegate

Is the wastegate on the side of the turbo, quite visible from the drivers side? It has a long thin shaft and then it looks like a very small brake master cyclinder, correct?

Now how do I shim it, if in fact I'm talking about the right thing?

Why are you yelling?

Your in the wrong section for diesel engine questions this should be in the diesel section, not the 70 section.

14 PSI too much boost for this little engine, I would think. 12 PSI max.

Sorry about the yelling earlier I get excited about boost.

Thanks again guys, that's exactly what I needed to know. Now I need to do it

Fun has began

So far I've put in only one washer to space the plate of the wastegate out, noticed a small increase in power, seems like where it would normally roll of in power, it will continue to accelerate for a little longer.

So today I'll finish installing the boost gauge and continue to play with spacing the wastegate.

I'll report back with some boost readings, and how it feels from behind the steering wheel.

So, boost controller installed, took it out for a burn with only the first washer installed, boost registered 8psi under full load.

Place second washer in, boost was 9 psi, so I went on a third washer and now under full load 10psi.

It definetely pulls harder at the top end, but you need to push the motor to get that power out of it.

I need the turbo to spool up quicker to really make use of the extra boost, I read something before about deleting the EGR system, supposedly it makes your turbo spool earlier.

Anyways a few more washers and I'll likely be more satisfied.

Cheers,

Tried what Wayne said and disconnected the line to the wastegate, now it boost up 14 psi, more average is 12psi

Really accelerates now, pulls strong up hills.

Thanks for the help, everyone

Sounds great! congrates on figuring it all out. I see 12 would be pretty good. Might as well boost the heck out of it. At least that can get the EGT's down, and I bet the cooler egts will help the head more than the extra psi may hurt it.

Did you say if you had a pyro gauge installed? What kinda EGTs are you seeing?

no pyro yet but I should get on that, keep it under raps.

I did notice that my temp gauge actually moves when under full boost going up a hill, it went up like 10 degrees in the non metric scale, farenheit is it called, I'm a metric kid.

no offense, but I would not operate that engine with out a pyro.

Even if you do a a quick install and just drilled post turbo on the down pipe. Then add 200 degrees from what it reads, so 1000 would be your max target for egt.

Too many threads on here about blown heads on the 2l-te engines in those prados.

It is the best 200 bucks to spend on your truck. And a really easy install.

I hear ya, a pyro is in the works, hopefully get it done this week.

Even when I'm pushing it, up long hills and under full boost the highest water temp I've seen is 195 degrees farenheit, and that's only 5-7 degree increase.

I feel fairly confident in this engine, I've heard all th problems people have been having with them, it's seems like they all have cracked heads or eventually will. There's 64,000 kms on my oddometer and I've put 8,000 kms on myself.

Hopefully with a little preventative measures I will escape the cracked head syndrome.

Cheers
