i tried getting new shoes for the Bj last week. got some rear ones fine for the small rear drums. Had to go to a different parts place for the front and the ones they gave me looked the same as the rear ones. They insist the shoes on all early and late 40 series are the same width (5.5cm) but mine are 7.5cm wide. Its got the toyota parts place stuffed as to what they came off.

So is it stock or did all 40s come with front shoes the same width as the back shoes? I have only done 110 000k on this set and they are about 1/4 worn, but one pad is wearing unevenly, so i want to replace.

For SWB and MWB the shoes are of equal width until the 1976 model when they get the wider fronts. For LWB the shoes are always equal, but in 1976 they get wider fronts and rears too.

Thanks Dave
you're a champ

i went down the road and talked to the ginuwine toyota parts place and he swears that no early or late 40 series came with wider shoes at the front than the back, they were all the same width. So i got no idea whats going on here. anyways.

What size are your drums? Did you end up getting the wide shoes for the front?

havn't measured them diameter wise. The backs are normal size for the back, small, and the fronts only just fit in a 15inch rim with a few mm to spare. I havn't found any yet, but apparently if i go to a brake manufacturer i can have them match the size on a chart. They must be off a hj47 or something. I will check the back of my 47 this weekend when i pick it up.

Are there places there that would re-line your old brake shoes?

Dave

plenty, i'm in the only real city in the state, so i'm not sweating it. I had the brakes done by some dodgy mech when i brought the car, and he didn't mention any problem getting parts.

one other issue, the locator bolt on the front right spring pack has snapped when the u-bolts came loose and the front axle moved 3inches backwards. I belted the axle forward on the pack again but how do i put a new locator bolt in the spring pack? also just brought a new tre kit for $76 and second hand linkages for $75 which i am going to put on this weekend. Spent last weekend dragging the 47 1100k on a car trailer behind the hdj100. all that dirt and car trailers dont mix.

The bolt can be driven out but often these get rusted and are a bitch to remove. Heat it up with a torch, let it cool and drive it out with a BFH while you stand on the spring. The curvature of the spring assembly makes it hard to remove, so do what you need to somehow flatten it. The replacement bolt is available from the dealer or just use a generic grade 8 bolt whose head will fit in the spring perch.
