Is anyone interested in one of these ?

I am going to build one so the 42 qt fridge will drop out the back of 40 for easy access. They are cool. If you search on the main forum page there is a write up from a guy in socal that did one.

Very cool idea IMO.

I replied in that thread my interest. :D Now, if only there was a fridge to go with it.

Will work with standard cooler of right size as well.

Micheal and I plan to hash out the details and then take a crack at it.

Come to the meeting Thurs. @ 7 at the Santa Rosa Round Table Pizza on Marlow road in the Safeway shopping center. Corner of Marlow & Guernville Rd.

Sounds good, newer style coleman or the older 54 qt style steel over plastic?

Only reason I ask is I have been on the fence about restoring our '79 to find out they're reproducing them now! :) I'll bring ol' red to try out.

Coolers can vary, sometimes the old ones work very well. Depends on their air seal IMO. Set it out with some ice in it and see how many days it stays, remember to open and close it a number of times each day. I test em and prior to getting the arb fridge I had a reliable 3 day cooler and then it would hold the cold water for 2 more but the fridge takes care of it,

O/T but I hope this is a valuable set of questions, let me know if it belongs elsewhere..

Can I pick your brain over how you then approach the whole bear issue?

Most of the public access camps, like Sugarpine for example, now have lockers, but even then we had a couple trying to force the handles.

How does having a fridge assist or detract? Do you go ahead and unplug it and move it into a locker overnight?

How does the weight of a fridge affect the ability to "string up" off of the ground if no locker is availble?

ooh, good questions. I've seen what bears will do to cars in Yosemite, I'd hate to have that happen to a vehicle I loved (IE my Land Cruiser).

Good question. If suspect possible bear activity usually just rig a sling for cooler and bag full of misc stuff and then winch up into a good location. Or fix truck and cooler after bear ravages it and thank goodness that kept em busy and not eating me. You can only do so much against the bears when they are hell bent on something.

very true. My last backpacking trip, my wingman and I were discouraged from using trees to stash foods, as bears have figured out out to cut down the lines.

Last trip, the one I mentioned, I took a pair of shoes and slammed them together to get that whip-crack type of sound, only it was a lot louder than I expected and we got a visit from Ranger Rob asking to see where I was hiding my gun. :D If course two days later I felt a little guilty for having thrown a piece of log in the night at what I thought was a bear by our tent to find out I had killed a small woodland mouse. Poor thing probably just wanted to snack on some pine seeds.

He didn't find it as funny as I did, but the sound did work. I wonder if you'd have similar circumstances if you were to fire off a blank instead?

OK, thanks for the slight detour..
