My 5 spd hz powered lj78 has in the last few days developed a bad sounding squeek, coming from the drivetrain. When ever I take my foot off of the go pedal and let the engine do some/all the braking, and in reverse. There is a clear ugly metal squeek, that sounds like it is rotational ( faster when I'm going faster and slower when I'm going slower). the sound seems like it's coming from between the diff and the transfercase.

I know my transfer case is well used and that my output bearing is in that state aswell. I pumped some grease (15 pumps )into my drive shaft when this first happened a few months back, and the noise stopped. I'm sure I got my work cut out for me, just looking for some input/direction.

Thanks,
Joel.

Howdy! If the grease fixed it before, then try the same thing again. It sounds like your due for some new ujoints. Go with OEM on these for the best results. John

Thanks John,

I pulled the driveshaft, and there was a squeek in the rear U-joint.:D Oh and more grease didn't work this time.

The next question is - does anyone know if any north american vehicles use the same U-joints? I'd like to source locally to get er done sooner than later. I'm going to try a a 92 Toyota P/U to see how that works.

Thanks
Joel.

So I went to the local Lordco, and I had 2 options for a replacement U-joint for the back of the rear shaft. one for a reg cab and ext cab( 1989-95). the regular cab worked ("Precision universal joint" # 387), didn't get to the front, I ran out of drive with my under sized vise:mad:

At least you know what it is.
