Anyone have FJ62 driveshafts laying around? I have swapped in the 4.11 diffs, installed the Aussie locker. The 62 flanges are different from the 60 flanges, which I expected and then purchased FJ62 shafts, which should have been here by now. Unfortunately my time crunch does not constitue a crisis on the sellers side, and cannot get him to send updates on shipping or any response in general. So now my Tuttle shake down cruise is probably out, and my trip to Colorado, may have to get pushed back.

SO that leaves me to either drill the flanges, which I attempted and will be iffy, due to space, and the accuracy of the holes, even when using the 60 drive flange as a guide, or find another pair, local. I guess if I could get one I could use the slip on one side, and the shaft part on the other, just bolting the 62 sides to the new diffs, and the 60 halfs to the transfer side.... hhhmmm

help.....

I have a set still on a parts rig but I'm in the same boat as you in the sense that I'm swaping in thirds from a 62... perhaps we can swap shafts if you need these asap...PM me ;)

Can't you swap in the pinion flanges from the old diffs? They should both be fine splined.

Disclaimer......I know nothing about 60s or 62s:frown:

I believe you are correct Ed...the only reason I didn't plan on that is because the flange on my 60 is really groved/fubar'd onthe seal surface and leaks even with new seal. brian you might try this first...?

Yes, you could, but then you have to retorque the pinion nut with the crush sleeve, which may affect the preload of that bearing...... I think. I wanted to make this an easy in/out swap. It really is that easy, it's just tough when you don't get the parts that can make it work. The rear swap literally took just over an hour with the Aussie going in as well.

I have a solution with Eyezlee helping me out.

Thanks for the help guys! When I build my 4.56 diffs for the 40, I will install 8 hole flanges that will fit in either vehicles. See, I learnt something....

I don't think that you would change the preload by swapping flanges. I've done three with just a new stake nut. The bearing preload is set with shims, isn't it?

But, glad you're getting it worked out.

Hell what do I know, I thought it had a crush sleeve. I swapped the front and did a complete rebuild of the axle. So I stood back and said "you're a stud", took a swig from my beer and then saw this laying there under the tools...... :censor::censor::censor::whoops::censor::doh:

This was after I had already once gone back in on that side and make sure I had enough grease in the birf.....

Here’s a rare occasion where I actually contribute some tech...

I looked in my manual. The 60 does set pinion preload with shims according to this clip from the chassis manual. My experience is with mini thirds and I know those are crush sleeve other than aftermarket and some oddball early years.

Well looky there. Thanks Matt. I was under the impression that both my 60's and 40 would have crush sleeves. I even bought the chevy crush sleeves since they are thicker.

Thanks for getting me the driveshafts too. I will call Kirk tomorrow and hopefully all my work this past week will not be for nothing.

I owe ya some brews for sure.

Update: FJ62 slip yoke does not fit FJ60 Shaft side. The splines are the same but the inside dia. of the FJ60 part is smaller than the outside dia. of the FJ62.

Maybe the picture will make more sense. The solid part of the left piece, that slides into the right side, is bigger on the FJ62 driveshaft, so it won't fit into the FJ60 side.

I know its to late now , But could you cut off the steel dust cover and use a shock boot in its place??

Shotgun, yes, was/is an option, but had no way to get that done yesterday morning. I will just get the flanges off the 62 and then put them on the 60 driveshafts.

Live and learn....

Shafted

so how close in length are the 60/62 shafts side by side?

Not close at all. The rear is way shorter on the 62, I guess due to the Auto tranny, and the front is longer, due to the double cardin on the front of my 60. Mine is an 84, so no spacer on the back of the tranny either. That makes it even longer. The splines are the same on 60 and 62, but the rest does you no good.

and, Matt, once again, thanks for the help!

any time...;)

so does this mean no wheeling for you this weekend?

Yep. my pretty little 60 sat in the parking lot. I got to ride in Kirk's and another guy with a Jeep that has a 502 in it. Sweet rigs.

So my shafts should be here Wednesday. I will get the new u joints tomorrow and be ready to swap out flanges, and drive it for the first time then, after the axle work and aussie install, this past week. Then friday I tow it out to Colorado for 10 days of mountain time.

I'm in better shape this year for the trip than last year. Last year I got done at 4am putting in all new clutch components/trannyand transfer case seals and rear main seal, in the FJ40.

I loaded it on the trailer after a one block test drive, showered, and drove for 8 hours. This year looks like I may be ready before the morning of departure. I better wait before I say that.....
