Hello All,

I've now owned my LC for about 3 months and have noticed I do have the clunk/thud after releasing the brakes from a harder stop. It doesn't happen all the time. You would think its a caliper sticking if you didn't see the attached pictures.

Well I've noticed my slip joints are pretty corroded and I question that they are even able to slide. Has anyone see this before and have you had any luck treating/removing the corrosion?

If I decide to replace, can I just replace the rear yoke and is this even something that can be purchased separately?

Cheers,

, what does the rest of your undercarriage look like? I was expecting a little corrosion, but that looks pretty bad. Being cheap, I'd take it off and see what could be done before buying new, but suspect you might have a hard time keeping a good seal after shining it up. Which may, or may not, be a bad thing... Was this picture taken with the truck at normal ride height?

Pictures like this make me so glad I live in the desert where the steel parts never get this bad, even after decades of use.

The joy of living in the Midwest. I'm going to drop the shaft and see if it has smooth movement or is bound up.

I think you'll find it's bound up, for a normally lubed shaft (giggle) you'd expect to see polishing and a grease ring about 3/8 along the slip shaft consistent with its sliding for drive train and suspension flex. Might be an idea to score a handful of new drive shaft nuts with bolts before you drop it, in expectation of busting a few in the process.

The price for new shaft is $439.00 in case anyone wanted to make any donations:p

Rest of the truck isn't bad. Truck was a normal height with the picture taken. I'll see if I can get the yoke out and the condition of the splines. If the splines are corroded then its done.

Just get a bunch of grease in all the zerk fittings (both prop shafts, and both spider yokes). I bet there isn't any real damage where the metal actually contacts metal in the telescoping portion of the prop shaft. I use a grease gun and add it until I see grease oozing out of the spider yoke and until the truck begins to raise on the prop shaft.

Don't notice anything over bumps. The only time I hear the THUD is on a hard stop every once in awhile. I've tried to nail down the pattern of when happens but can't do so.

You know the odd thing is this has been dealer services all its life so you would think they'd have grease the heck out of prop-shaft, not the case. The dealer must have been trying to save a few pennies and only allowed two pumps on the grease gun.
