I was wondering if some people would post their opinions on some common drill presses that are around.

I need a drill press for a couple of things, like drilling bumper holes, drilling for welding panels, rear bumper and tire carrier and any other work.

I see Jeff Zepp has a small drill press. It looks like an older one, which are usually tougher than the new ones made.

I know the key to a good drill press is SLOW drilling when working with metal.

I am looking to spend less than $150 and can't buy from HF.

DELTA MACHINERY 10" BENCH TOP DRILL PRESS 1/4HP 5 SPEED

Small craftsman?
One from Lowes?
Home Depot?

I can't spend much more than $200

Will any of these new plastics do what I want?

Anyone out there with small drill press that can lend some help?

Where you at? There's a shop near me closing that has some old 40s-50s Delta drill presses they are selling. That's what I have. Tough to beat the old quality with the new cheapanese crap.

At this time I have 3 but 2 are way more than 200.00$..... the best one I have ever come across for less than 200.00 is the Ryobi.... but I have several Ryobi power tools and they are well worth the $$$$ besides I got a thing for buying @ Lowes or Home Depot on the 6 or 12 month no interest thing.... I like to use their money when I can...

junk, i'd be interested if they are cheap enough and i can persuade them to ship. flip me the details if you don't mind.

I have a delta bench top, 12", five speed. It's good quality. My only complaint is that it runs too fast. 620 rpm is the lowest speed setting, and that's too fast for metal when using larger bit sizes, especially hole saws. I would recommend something with a 1/2 chuck...

(edit) Now that I've admitted I have a problem, you've got me eyeing the 12-speed grizzly--it goes down to 140 rpm!. But it's a little more expensive than your price point. What is also amazing are some of the prices of other drill pressed on this page...$40 for a drill press--c'mon you gotta be kidding.

You can't go wrong with an older Delta or Rockwell/Delta. I have a table model that I did some work on the pulley system to slow it down.

Nearly all the import crap is pure junk. I have used a couple made--sold-- by Enco (Enco.com) that were decent and they may still be in your price range.

I almost gave up on the rockwell stuff till I had a buddy point one out for me.

$75 later I am a VERY happy man..

Found a cool old atlas for a buddy as well.

Keep your eyes open and you will find what you are looking for.

That's the ticket! Those are hard to find....but if they are their commercial line you better anti up.

If you watch machine shop auctions some nice units can be found. A buddy got a Clausing 20" floor press for ~$400, I got a Grainger Taiwan 20" copy -$200 and 2, 14" Deltas for $130. Wound up selling the Deltas and keeping the 20". For a "cheap Taiwan copy" it performs well, puts holes in whatever I point it at. The biggest job that I have done with it was a bunch of 5/8" x 11 holes in 3/4" plate, drilled and tapped without drama.

The variable speed is what sold me on keeping it, very nice to be able to dial the speed in while drilling and the 5/8" Albrecht keyless is nice. The drawbacks are that it's not exactly compact or portable!:D
