I have to ask because I have been using it some to slow the vehicle. What do you know/think about using the overdrive off button to the slow the vehicle? It seems to work fine and from an car guys view I do not think I am doing any damage. I could be way off base here. Please help out a fellow 100 series guy and let me know, yes, no or maybe and the reasons for your answers.

I click off OD to slow the cruiser quite freqently.
And when I'm heading down the mountain leaving home, I generally stay in second gear all the way down.
There's a long discussion on the 80 board about this. Some of the guys think it's a bad idea to increase wear on an expensive part (the transmission) to save wear on an inexpensive part (brake pads), but others see the increased tranny wear as minimal. I think the worst wear comes from shifting into second at a high speed, so I try not to do that. I start out in second and don't shift to drive until i get to the bottom of the mountain.

If it's well-maintained, the tranny on an LC will likely outlast the vehicle, so I see it as a good use of the equipment to slow the truck with the transmission and save the brakes a little. It's sort of a "tastes great, less filling" debate with no wrong answer.

That is what I was thinking. I started using this method after reading alot about hybrid vehicles and all the energy that is lost when you brake. I drive a major highway every morning and afternoon with a bunch of traffic and always seem to be slowing down for one clown or another and I use the downshift vs breaking so i do not loss to much momentum.

This method does increase gasoline consumptiion, however.
