My double cardan joint started making a chirping sound, so greased all the U-joints and the cardan but at 150K miles, can I replace or rebuild it?
Sme sites say yes (for Jeeps - that is where google took me) other toyota sites say it is not rebuildable.
Who is correct?
Thanks!

I think finding the parts is usually the hardest thing.......contact Cdan maybe?

Found a teardown thread on yotatech....
Double Cardan U-joint Teardown '02 Tacoma - YotaTech Forums

EDIT: Doing more reading it looked like the older double cardan's are the ones that are hard to get parts for.....I'd be interested to know what you find out.

thanks for the link!
It still looks like a 'rebuild' is a PITA!
I'll call c-dan if necessary and if my regreasing hasn't stopped my squeeking.
a test drive will confirm how i proceed, i'll post up my findings.

40 mile test drive confirmed that I'll not be rebuilding the joint at this time.:D
I will be calling cdan about the parts and cost/availability as I don't want a driveshaft failure!
We all know that PM in the garage at home is better than fixing on the highway!

That is good to hear.....

Lubing is definitely better than rebuilding.

I PM'd Cruiser Dan - this is what I found out:

ME - I had my double cardan joint start chirping this weekend for about 10 miles until I could get it home. There I greased the u-joints and the DC.

Is this something that I need to replace or rebuild or just keep greased?

If maintainable, rebuild or replace, how much are parts?

CRUISER DAN - The joint is not serviced, only a complete drive shaft.

ME- The greasing stopped the chirping noise, and the u-joints have no play in them so I considered leaving well enough alone - unless you suggested something else.

CRUISER DAN - A rear shaft assembly lists for $1,532.22 and your cost would be $1,225.78 plus the ride. I do not know of any alternative repair methods if the CV has issues.

D-

ME - I'll be leaving this driveshaft alone until it fails - thanks again to CRUISER DAN!

Take it to a reputable drive shaft shop and ask them to put new U-joints in it. Ask them to use Japanese made U-joints. Make them order them from their supply house in California if they need to. I use a local shop for all my driveshaft work and they frequently need to order in stuff- but I've had them completely rebuild the CV joint on my goofy 45*, long spline rear shaft.

I completely rebuilt mine. Your parts will be different but the process should be the same. https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/156646-toyota-cv-double-cardan-joints-rebuildable.html

I will still wait until failure (or warmer weather) to do the DC and U-joints.
Thanks for the link!

Like stated above according to Toyota they aren't serviceable but it can obviously be done. I had my driveshaft shop rebuild one (01 Runner) with whatever parts that they found for about $200. I also just replaced another completely dead rear shaft on a 02 4-Runner with a 90K mile junk yard unit for $170 shipped.

dizzamn

Edit: @ the price of the new propeller shaft that is......

x2, am I reading that right.. its $1200+ for a driveshaft? Thats crazy...

Jomama - the $1200 is correct and you are correct, that is STUPID $ for an OEM driveshaft.
