Help please, I can't open my '86 FJ60 front passenger door. The lock button is PHYSICALLY stuck down in the lock position. What can I do without beating the door up. She's in nice shape and I don't want to get over-zealous. TIA for the help!

There is a small tension spring on the latch mechanism inside the door. The spring rusts from water dripping inside the door. When the spring fails, the lock pawl on the latch no longer wants to get out of the way of the bellcrank thingie that the knob pulls up on.

Bottom line: to open the pass door, the first step is to remove the door panel. fortunately, it is possible to remove inner door panel w/ door locked shut.

Next step is to move things around on the latch until you can get the lock knob to slide up. Then door will open normally. Then remove door latch and figure out where spring is supposed to be located. Either get new spring from hardware store, or get new/used latch assembly.

You can pull panel off driver's door to see the spring and see how lock mechanism actually works.

Thanks guys!!! Tomorrow I'm workin on this...Also LOF and front brakes. A grand of thanks! JimC- nice detailed explanation!
