Are the door hinges for a hard top 40 different than for a soft top 40?

I don't think so, and I think they're even consistent across the big 1975 model year changes...

The ones on my soft top model have one closed loop and one half loop on the body side. The '71 I had years ago had two identical hinges on the body side and the Aqualu half doors I ordered have door hinge straps included but they don't fit. Was just wondering, went ahead and ordered a stainless full set from SOR.

Yea they are. The soft to have a half loop on one of the rings. The hard top have two full loops. I notice that on yours.

I feel better now. Thanks Roxx! I was worried a little bit, thought maybe I had a prototype or something else off the wall.

Here are photos of an upper and lower hinge which was inside the body. I can't say for 100% sure they are stock given the fact the PO's have done a lot of work(?) on the 40 and there has been a lot of cutting and alterations. I can say for a 100% fact, the drivers side upper hinge is a lot easier to change than the passenger side upper. There is so much in the way with the glove box that to simply start the bolts is a chore for someone with large hands.

The windshield frame is slight different as it will be missing holes for the hard top and FST trucks have the fold down tail gate and mounting holes in the tub for it.

My windshield frame did have mounting holes for the hardtop, a fold down tailgate with loops for the hold down straps and mounts in the rear of the tub on the wheel wells for the rear top bow as well as rings on the outside of the dashboard for retaining straps.

My money is that your truck is a factory soft top by the tail gate alone...not sold with any hard top as far as I know.

Perhaps the WS frame was swapped out - lots of owners left the hood unlatched and took out the ws frame.

About 15 years ago my friend bought a FST FJ40 and we had to drill holes in the WS frame and use RIV-Nuts to mount a hard top.

I agree. But, hard top or soft top, I am looking forward to having it complete again so I can enjoy driving it. Thanks for the reply.
