So, I've been battling this for a while now but it's just now really come to a head...

My wife has a dog that she has had for about 6 years (dog is approximately 8). The dog is a mixed breed that she adopted. The pound said that the dog had been abused and gave this big sad sob story....I get it.

This dog and my dog (White Lab) live inside with us and have for the past year and a half.

My dog is very obedient. Born and raised to hunt. I have no issues with him doing whatever I ask of him.

The first few months they could not get along....my wife blamed my 'big' dog for picking on her dog....

As we were more attentive we noticed that her dog would pick a fight with my dog...be it over a chew toy, the bed he was laying on etc. Shes especially bad about standing right in the way and not moving when you come through.

We're wayyyy past that (just giving you history).

Now we have bought a house with property in the country. We do not have a fenced in back yard so there is free reign. If her dog is not carried out on a leash she will NOT come back. Nor will she obey any command given to her (and whines constantly).

I came home from work about a week ago and she was loose...muddy as hell and not listening to a word my wife was saying (had been loose for about 3 hours).

So I finally get the dog to come to me and when I grab her collar she snapped at me....(first mistake).

No big deal. Maybe I startled her...

A couple days ago my little boy (7months) was sitting in the floor playing with toys. Whatever he gets his hands on he DOES. So she comes and lays down all over his toys.

My little boy grabs her hair and starts playing with it. Before I can correct him he pulls it...

She whirled around quickly as to almost snap at him but luckily I was hovering over them at that time so she cowers down and goes off.

I'm afraid I won't be there one day and she'll bite my boy...

Don't get me wrong I really would like to pop a cap in the bitches head and throw her in the ditch but I know it would break my wife's heart.

I really need opinions....

We had a dog that ended up biting our at the time 1 year old daughter. Dog was adopted from the Humane Society and had food issues. He was watching us eat something on the couch and our daughter pulled up to us and got next to him and he snapped at her. Left some marks but nothing real serious. Could have been a lot worse.

No more than a week later, that dog found a new home with my dad in the country. It was my wife's idea.

As for ideas, crate the dog in another room when your son is playing. Dog will probably hate it, and it will probably upset your wife, but it's a safe compromise.

Just remember that the safety of your children trumps the charity of a dog (in my opinion).

I'm for sure doing that. I will have to come up with a creative solution to get rid of the thing. I worry when I'm not present is the only thing. We're going to have a serious sit down discussion about it this weekend...

That dog would be GONE one way or the other...

How about just letting the little ingrate live outside. Maybe it will run away for good.

I really expected a higher 'velocity' response from you on this Stacey.

I'm thinking that she will "run away" soon. As in to the pound.
