Dobermans are not a dog that can be left outside to entertain itself. Some of them can become Velcro dogs, if allowed. I had to call mine in this morning for breakfast because they were 'protecting' the yard from a wandering neighbor dog.

Different parts of behaviour can be learned, some (drive) is inheirited. Temperment can be shaped, personality often develops, and willingness to work for you comes from how much they enjoy the work you are asking them to do.

What you saw was a classic BackYardBreeder. The dogs you saw are very probably heavily line-bred (in-bred), and the pups could well model the behavior you saw, unless the breeder and you are extremely vigilant about socializing the one you choose.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you want a family companion dog who will interact appropriately with a 2yo human on up, and you have experience w/Rotties. Why not stick w/a Rott?

Price range: for a pet-quality dog from a reputable breeder I wouldn't go much over a grand, unless you are thinking about getting into competitive sports (Agility, Obediance, Herding). [My rescue cost $60 at the pound, and the re-home was free.] The local dober rescue charges $250, and Animal Humane charges $125 for 'pure-bred's.

Keep those good questions coming...

Hmm, I liked the pups though. I guess I'll shop around some more. Need to see some doberman pups. But i defn did not look the behavior or setup of this person's backyard

A lot of what you saw with the GSDs you visited was probably due to lack of training, being left alone, secluded, not socialized, etc. The father of my dobe barked the whole time I was at their place. However, they lived out in a secluded area, so he wasn't socialized at all. My dobe doesn't bark at all unless someone knocks at the door, and then he will bark once and wait for me to get the door with tail wagging. I brought him up in a college town though, so he is very well socialized. Maybe even over socialized. I paid $450 for mine, and he is worth every penny. You should be able to find a good dobe for $500 or less and a good GSD for around $300.

amazing breed

is that the stock suspension, or did you put a lift kit on? :D

Genetics are a huge part of who the dog is. It's a good thing to investigate the parents of any dog you buy from a breeder. If a breeder will not let you meet the parents, then walk away. They should have the temperment you want in the puppy when it's an adult. Remember, if she's been backyard breeding for 18 years, she could have already bred those behaviors into her "line." Backyard breeders will have at least 2 litters a year. Bitches go into heat at 6 months. So theoretically, she could have 36 breedings in 18 years. (if she breeds a pair, then the pups, then the pups...etc). Plenty of time to inbreed and cement those bahaviors you don't want.

Have you ever looked at the magazine Dog Fancy? There are ads in the back for breeders. Make sure that any breeder you choose is breeding AKC registered pups. If you are not planning on showing the dog (which will save you $$$) then make sure the breeder tells you your puppy is pet quality. That means that the dog is not top of the line show confirmation. Which is fine for what you need. You should also make sure that the dog comes with a spay/neuter contract. What that means is that the breeder cares enough about the quality of their line not to perpetuate less than perfect characteristics. Also, be sure that the GSD puppy comes with an OFA hip certification. Breeders are required by AKC to have the bitch and the stud xrayed and certified for stable hips. That can save you thousands in hip surgery costs (as me how I know...).

Lemme tell you, you get what you pay for. A few hundred dollars now will save you thousands of dollars and tons of heartache in the future. I was on a waiting list for 2 years for a Saint Bernard puppy. The cost would have been $1200. In stead, I adopted a puppy mill puppy. $5000 in hip surgery later, I wouldn't trade him for the world...but damn he the most expensive free puppy ever.

Pharaoh hounds are awesome. I have had 3. Two died from parvo at an early age. The other one lived to be 16 years old. They were bred to hunt and have a funny/strange personallity.

Dobes

We've had Dobes since the early 80's. Never met a more loyal, and intelligent dog. We'll always have Dobes in our home.

Those pharaoh hounds are very beautiful :)

Thanks for the advice on the Saint Bernard, I'm gonna be patient with this. Been wanting a dog for about 7-8 years now, have really been looking into it these past three months. Every place I call they all go "you want it before Christmas". I'm just being real patient with this.

Thanks for all the advice :)
I know it's been six months later but it took a while

The breed is a Turkish Kangal
