OK, so we got a new dog the other day, she's a golden retriever, about 2 years old, great dog.

A couple of problems, one being too much barking! At the wind, at the birds in the trees, at dogs 2 blocks away, whatever!

So I was thinking about some of those "control collars", like the ones that shock the dog, or spray something at them when they bark, some of them emit a tone to train the dog not to bark.

Anybody here used any of these methods to stop annoying barking?

there's a gazillion different ones on ebay, various methods, don't know what is the best and what really works.

Suggestions???

thanks

Great dog! While my Chocolate Lab is not a nuisance barker, she will bark at power-walkers across the street, neighbors and others. The trick is to encourage barking but control it if needed. What I have done and currently do is to reward her with a treat and verbal praise for legit barks: "Good girl, let's get a snack!" Other times, when I'm home working, it's quiet and she barks (BIG bark) for no apparent reason, I'll quickly end it VERBALLY: ""Ooookay, oooookay, that's okay, good girl". Barking stops, her attention quickly turns to me as master and a potential treat, see? She responds very well to this and I'm no pro dog trainer. Your whole family can do this. My talking to her (voice command) is fast and effective when compared to sprays, water bottles, etc. Never try to extinguish her barking - which I think these devices may do. Try to get her off-leash verbal command trained too. Work with that Golden and you'll be amazed. Good luck. We really need a dog icon!

get another dog, and they'll keep each other company. 1 golden, 1 lab and 1 mix here. mostly we have no problems

The wal-mart 40.00 electrtic collars work wonders used it on my cocker, basset, it gives a warning buzzer and then a painless (yes I tried it) shock.
