Does a 200 LC or LX really need a warranty?

A used car is still a used car and it will have issues even if it is 200series. I had an extended warranty on my 2013 LX when I bought it in 2019 with 64K miles. Paid for itself when the parking sensors went haywire and 3 needed to be replaced and the ECU. Then paid for itself again when the AC compressor failed, then again when one of the AHC lines failed and then again when my radiator failed.

Service history or not stuff breaks.
sounds like you bought a reliable land cruiser with 25 year usesble life

When I bought my 2013 LC in 2018 i initially opted for a 3rd party warranty. Due to the known issues of cam tower leaks, timing cover leaks and the radiator issues on the pre 2018 model years. After my radiator showed the common crack i contacted the warranty company and they wouldnt honor the repair as the radiator hadn't failed and spilled its coolant everywhere. I canceled the warranty and got most of my money back.
Also with cam tower and timing cover leaks, they are often small and remain as seeps for a long time and so i imagine most aftermarket warranties will figure out ways to avoid covering the job.

Headgasket insurance would be my main reason to consider a warranty....with that said throw the money that the warranty costs ($2,000-3,500) into the market and within a few years youll have a good chunk of change to cover any repairs. Just some food for thought.
"with that said throw the money that the warranty costs ($2,000-3,500) into the market and within a few years youll have a good chunk of change to cover any repairs. Just some food for thought."

Cause markets never go down? What kind of returns are you anticipating that $2000-$3500 will provide a good chunk of change in a few years?

No you don't need a warranty.

I have a 2013 with 142k that I beat the s*** out of and it still looks and drives like it's new, it's never had an issue, ever. The radiator issues are overblown.

Open my hood and my engine cover has mud all over it. What is the point owning these if you don't have fun with them? It snowed 10 inches last year which is unheard of for us... My 570 absolutely ****ing DESTROYED it. Passed so many stuck 4x4s...

We will find out in 5 years. Stick around and we will see where this goes for my "Head Gasket Replacement Fund" that will mature in 2030 😆.
After dealing with the fine print of these 3rd warranties plus the added deductibles they pile on to actually use the warranty I can find a much better use for my money...especially on a Toyota. Bmw, Mercedes, Audi, Range Rover etc , one can easily justify the necessity of paying upfront for the warranty.

A new LX might be a different story.

The 5.7 is indestructible, so is the transmission.

The 200 series is better then some of its competitors, but that doesnt mean its unbreakable or its competitors are all in shambles.

The warranty is a personal preference, and truly I think the best you can get is the one underwritten by Toyota themselves, purchased only within the bumper to bumper factory warranty. All the ones promoted by influnceners or other 3ps are not great (fidelity seems to be the only good used car warranty but, rennlisters seem to speak highly of the company).

I'll take my chances....

"The radiator issues are overblown."

Until it happens like it did in mine. It's a pretty well documented defect.

Your argument is "don't get a warranty because I claim to have had no issues at all." You got lucky.

A used vehicle will have issues, 200 series or not. A good warranty is cheap insurance.

me too.

As @185 said , 5.7 is great, but " indestructible" it is not as you state.
I've got 142,000 hard miles on mine and it's never drank a drop or needed anything.

Not really, my LS430 never breaks. This truck has never broken. Even my 22yo Mercedes is a tank. My radiator is fine and looks fine "where the hairline cracks should be". Even if it did blow at 142k, that's not horrible. The 5.7 is a tough as nails V8, because there are 2 threads doesn't mean jack to me personally.

I would advise against these aftermarket warranties bc they'll deny if you're a mile over for an oil change.

My 05 LS430 is literally bulletproof. One of the best Toyotas ever made. The 5.7L doesn't even come close.

Yeah don't let get facts get in the way of your alternate reality.

Show me facts that more 5.7s have these serious issues than ones that don’t and then I’d be concerned. I’m not in an alternate reality. I have 142k miles and nothing has ever gone wrong, at all, other than my spouse frying the alternator from jumping it wrong. The 5.7 is a tank. If I have any engine trouble ever I’ll report it on here. A buddy of mine has a Tundra well into 250k and has never done any real maintenance on it. Original coolant. He still tows his race car around states driving 80MPH.

Even if my truck had an engine problem now, I’d be disappointed but that’s not terrible. 10 years and 142k miles of destroying everything in sight I can destroy—- that’s a good run. That’s basically 150k problem free miles.

LS430 best car ever made period of one of them for sure— mine’s a 2004. They don’t break and they are built like brick s*** houses and just drive THE SAME for decades. I had a thermostat go bad but it was running COLD the car never even overheated, lol. $140 later I was fine. Over my dead body would I ever dump that car. Lexus always tells me if I wanted to sell it it would be gone immediately. They don’t make em like that anymore. I do like that we both have LX and LS, good taste.

200 aint cheap. We just pretend it is around here.

Like those 996 boys who think they have a real Porsche, mezger elitism aside, we think we drive reliable elite Japanese suvs
The 200 requires a reliable owner, which is the best warranty the car could hope for. You see, most people don't understand that the traditional owner relationship dialectic is inverted with the 200; it, owns you. The better (more reliable, etc.) you are, the more benefit to the truck. Automotive Hegelianism be like that. (never read Hegel)

Lol my LX costs pennies to keep on the road. It’s a Toyota truck not a Range Rover. These are not expensive to maintain and they don’t really break either. My dealer friend in service LXs hardly come in at all for repairs.

One of the most accurate posts on this forum in the last 20 years!
