As a car salesman my advice is... liars are liars... be they a dealer who wants to be your buddy until he gets you out the door or the private guy one owner who abused his "well kept" vehicle.... Do your homework no matter who you buy from, by first doing what you did with the VIN... Run Carfaxes, check for maintenence in a dealer data base by supplying them with the VIN as you did.
I wont lie to make a sale (the anti salesman salesman if you will)... I've given answers that have cost me a sale... due the the fact I don't make much per sale like some salesman, but I work at a VERY busy one price dealership where its often about taking an order more so than selling. I'd rather be honest and have a loyal customer base who returns to by again and send refferals because a month later they realize they did not get ripped off or lied to.... HOWEVER, I work with people that as a customer there is no way I'd buy a car from them.
I'd say learn your game..... Intentionally ask a loaded question about timing belt etc, that you already know the correct answer to... and if you get as stupid as answer as you did from the last guy about "no timing belt" kick him in the nuts and walk away... " I don't know but I'll check and find out" backed up by printed documentation is the correct answer.
I don't work in this enviroment, but in the hard core world of a negotiating dealership, price, interest rate, and fees are negotiable..... If you finance through a dealer and he marks up your interest 2 points on a 60 month loan that means about $1500.00 more in his pocket.... Little known, but might as well add it to the price of the vehicle....
Good and bad guys everywhere, so do your homework and find out who's the clown and who may be a little more ernest by asking direct questions about how the dealership conducts business and if you don't like the answers keep looking!
