Do I need dual batteries to run a winch? I want to buy a winch but do not want to run dual batteries. Will one work?

Chris - Dual batteries are not necessary. If you have a strong battery that recharges quickly and a high output alternator, you can run the truck and a winch through most days on the trail. I wouldn't expect to do that on a cheap battery.

On the other hand, if you're 80 is running a 15" sub slammin' the Beastie Boys, high power neon light kits, catch-a-tan-Perakos-lights, and a fridge to keep'em cool cool fer yer hommies, you should consider a dual battery setup. :grinpimp:

There are a few good options out there. I've had good luck with 3 Odyssey batteries running as both starting and auxiliary. Currently using a 1700MJT as the primary battery running the truck, front winch, and headlights. No issues for 4 years. Optima makes good stuff as well. Everyone has their favorite.

Check with your yellow pages for a battery warehouse if you want a cheap but high output battery.

Interstate battery in Rocky Hill CT, I got a 800 CCA "New" battery with a few minor scratches for $25.

I run a 8274 with it, (single battery), no problems. I have a 77 40, obviously no PW etc. etc. But unless you are running a whole bunch of stuff plus a winch all at the same time, should be no problem. On the "occasions" that you do run the winch, shut off all the other stuff.

I'll add, I have a stock type alternator, no high output.

Plain old battery in mine, stock alt. which only puts out like 65 amps or so, no problems.

I run a single optima. I gave up on standard battery's years ago they will get internally damaged because of the physical abuse they endure. Both my 4runner and my cruiser have always worked well with the stock charging system and a single battery. however I don't run an ARB refrigerator with mine. This is with the same 9000i Warn different vehicles.

Optima Yellow Top with a 90A Delco alt. in my crap can. I haven't gotten a chance to try it out yet, but I'm not too worried.

Costco usually stocks the red and blue, and sometimes the yellow tops optimas. Forget the exact prices, but know it's way cheaper than anywhere else.

and no you don't need duals or optimas.
