For Shawn ( and anyone else who was there to hear the conversation)
I stopped by the DMV to check AGAIN the legalities of doing a motor swap in my 76 FJ40.
Shawn had mentioned that the laws had changed VERY RECENTLY and they were requiring that the only motor swaps that can be done have to be motors from the SAME manufacturer...I.E. toyota to toyota.
While there has been a change and it is AS STATED above. This ONLY APPLIES to 81 and newer vehicles. My 76 still falls under the OLD smog jurisdiction where all they will look for is a sealing gas cap, smog tail pipe readings and no visible smoke. The look for NOTHING ELSE!!:D:bounce::D:bounce2:, as unbelieveable as that may seem. They then sign off a "swap form" and change the No. of cylinders in the database and the smog monkeys just do as they would for a 76.

WHEW!!!! I was a bit worried going in there on that one!!!!

Just FYI!

So I'm okay to swap the engine in my 75 for a more efficient and cleaner engine but I can't do the same with my 84 which has almost exactly the same engine as the 75?

Bureaucracy is a wonderful thing.

Always double check. I have it on good authority that a couple of the smog guys at DMV don't know there a$$ from a hole in the ground and they are complete power tripping a-holes.

I don't know how that's all that different from the majority of DMV people I ever dealt with, but just and FYI.

What do you mean? I should check AGAIN!?!
There were three guyz in the booth over there who over heard the conversation. I would HOPE, at least ONE of the THREE would know something about this.
However, IF I go in to have this registered, and info was bad info...Ill just register it in carson at my mother in laws house. Ive touched base with them since the inception of this build and checked and re checked every step of the way trying to keep in compliance BEFORE I had done anything, including buying the harness and having the ECU done.

That was how I was to understand it. Well, you could swap for a more modern TOYOTA engine, at least. Would also have to add the smog gadgets and OBD gear.
I dont quite get it either, but Im selfishly GLAD that I in the exempt range for all that crap considering that Im almost DONE.

Aaanndd that is my problem with the smog laws as written. What we should care about is what comes out of the tail pipe, that is where the smog comes from. But no, we want to keep "dirty" vehicles dirty, regardless of whether a better/cleaner option is out there. Gotta love the logic behind that one.

Besides, what motor from Toyota would you swap in?? Most of the Toyota engines swaps are much more difficult/expensive than anything domestic, not to mention usually less power and less mpg than a domestic swap.

I still think a GM 4.2 inline DOHC VVT six (trailblazer/envoy) would be a sweet motor for a 60 series. Can you say 295 hp/280 lb/ft of torque with a 6k redline, with a flat torque curve? And probably 25% or better mileage. That would be a major improvement over the 2f with 115hp/220ish lb/ft of torque.

I recommend getting things in writing when you deal with dmv. A friend of mine got approval for a Diesel swap in his truck, then when he came back 6 mos later, they denied him.

He managed to get a waiver, but it was touch and go for awhile.

Is this the motor Sam is using in his race truck?

I hear ya. Last time I was there, I had gotten the dude to sign and date the info he gave me on his business card. However, all that I have heard...they could give a s*** who told you what if the rules had changed, it doesnt matter.
I DID forget to do that this time around, though. Either way, Im not changin it, so.. It is what it is. Ill sneak around it if I have to, but I AM trying to be straight up and honest and be in compliance for what is needed.

Had my eyes on the 4.2 and also the inline 5 3.7 that the h3's have... Anyone know what it takes to register your truck outside Washoe county?
