need a timber jack to do safer sawing on the ground. Mostly to avoid digging the saw in the dirt. Biggest diameter I would likely need to deal with is in the 24" exceptionally and normally less than 12".

I got steel pipes, flat bars, angle bars, and bolts. A welder, various cutting implements.

Seems like I should be able to make one myself easily enough. Should be fun and some welding practice.

Anybody made one? Design suggestions? Pics?

I would keep an eye on craigslist. They pop up there occasionally, very cheap.

Not here, never seen one. Not very many trees around unfortunately.
Plus I would enjoy making one.
Maybe one I can convert to cant hook somehow, replacing the stand with a spike.

true enough, it's to the point where there are videos on just about anything. A good thing.
I watch arborist videos a lot but never seen anything about timberjacks. Will search though, good idea.

added: yup, found a couple of vids. One did indeed do the conversion I was thinking about. Not too informative though but sure seems like a fun project to do for a DIY welder. Main design issue is likely the size and shape of the hook.
