Hi,

I've purchased a European Landcruiser KDJ120 (=Prado). It has the 3.0 turbocharged and intercooled common rail diesel. It's a 2005 car.

In Europe, there have been two versions of, what I presumed, the 1KD-FTV engine: Euro 3 1KD-FTV (2003 - 2005) and Euro 4 1KD-FTV (2006 - 2009).

I've read about a 2KD-FTV. It's unclear to me what the difference between a 1KD and a 2KD is. Obvious sources (like Wikipedia) don't seem to apply to European cars.

Extra question: how can I find out if I have a 1KD-FTV or 2KD-FTV in my Prado? The VIN-plate I presume? What should I be looking for?

Thanks,
Cedric

2KD is a 2.5 litre engine as opposed to the 3 litre 1KD

I think the 2KD FTV was only used in the Hiace and Hilux and other commercial vehicles, at least in Australia.
It should be on a plate somewhere.

Apparently the 2KD is quite under powered compared to the 1KD also.

It seems there were 2 versions of the 2KD FTV, one had another 60 nm of torque. In any case these were built for mainly delivery van usage, they were probably ok at suburban speed limits. Ive never driven one but they seem to hold their value on the used market, compared to the other Jap copies.
Good info here.

You're safe, they only had the 2KD FTV in 2wd Hilux and Hiace from what I can see and all the 95 model Prado diesels in Europe were 1KD FTV.

I drove a 2KD engine in Central America a couple of times. They were in the base model Hilux 4x4 pickups. Non VG turbo, not intercooled. Pretty simple looking engine actually. Just enough electronics to run the common rail injection system and all the rest is your standard diesel engine. Trying to talk my buddy into swapping on into his early 90s Hilux.
