I've done a search but there wasn't anything too clear about what is actually required for the system to function properly.
What I am doing is stealing a fuel tank out of a 60 (diesel) and putting into my pickup 4x4 (converted to diesel, there is tons of room under the flat deck and this way I have an inexpensive way of getting 90L tank)
Now the question is:
Do I need the octopus? the fuel evaporation plastic black box that is normally hidden in the rear quarter panel. What does it do that it has to be there?
If the octopus is needed, can I use something else, something smaller to accomplish the same result?
Does it need to be mounted the way it is or can it be mounted horizontally?
Also, other than the fuel feed, fuel return, fuel vent to the fill pipe and fuel fill pipe, do I need any other connections for the tank to vent and function properly? Is the charcoal canister required (or will help) that the gas engine used?

Thanks!

Should only need the feed, return, vent to filler, filler and a vented cap. cant see any need for the rest of that mess. On Gavin's HJ I took all that crap out since it was all rusted off anyway. No issues at all. No need for a charcoal canister as well since that is only for petrol venting and emissions.

I plan to have a feed/return/ tank vent to filler and vented cap in my swap. The other one in my case is the charcoal one that I plan to plug. The way I look at it the less places for water and moisture to get into the tank the better.

Well that's what I thought but wanted to make sure. I've never seen a point to it but other than emissions I figured there was a purpose for the seperator being installed there. I know the 40s also had something similar, so what good does it do?

Basically I plan on keeping everything in green, ditching everything in red, does anyone see an issue with this and why it would cause problems?

The u shape is only handy when you flip the car.
the plastic stuff is only handy when filling up, somehow the fuel splashes out of that tube in the filler tube while filling up.

edit: I have all my pictures about the fuel system here:

And I am not saying to remove stuff: only remove if you don't ever want to fill up again.

"the plastic stuff" allows you to completely fill the tank by letting the air at the top of the tank escape.

So essentially if you take those tubes and splice them into the filler neck so they vent to atmosphere during fillup, you should be fine.

Thread-resurrection - been driving my 1HZ for a year (~10k miles) and I left all the factory tank venting/evap stuff in place and installed a new but non-vented OEM cap. I get some negative pressure in the tank when I fill up.

I would like some opinions on:
1) any real risks associated with removing the tank evap system in the rear quarter panel
2) if the factory caps for 1HZ vehicles were vented and if I should drill my cap to vent it

thanks for your thoughts
