Hino diesel installed into hj-60 wagon

Hi all,

I read from another off road web site http://www.off-road.com/tlc/faq/engine.html that the hino diesel can adapt to a land cruiser wagon. I stopped in to a Hino truck dealer today for the primary purpous to verify what somone said was that the hino diesel is in the toyota land cruiser or some kind of variant. The shop counter person said thats not so but, he said there is a kit avaible to adapt the hino diesel engine to the land cruiser. The engine is 3,500 dollars. I thought that was a great idea. Not only are the engine parts common here in vanouver bc, hinos are sold in the united states and thay would work on the land cruiser here if it had the hino diesel.

If anyone know of these adapter kits I think this would interest alot of people. Hino dealer did not know where the kits came from but said thay exist. Any comments?

Will post to international section but..

The reason why this was posted her is by chance mabey somone here knew of the kit also, a introduction that it is possible to put a diesel and the parts are avaible at any hino dealership. If nothing comes of the international discussion group I will then ask the dealer if he knows where to get these kits. Chances are he probebly wont know.
Imagine having a cruiser that gets 30 mpg with a engine that can last 400km to 1 million kilometers if properly taken care of and simple to maintain.

I noticed that s79bj40 (here on mud) signature is "'83Hj47 4.0Id ToyHino". Makes me think he might know something about combining hinos and cruisers. Worth sending him a PM.

Hi all,

I read on another 4x4 site there is a adapter kit that makes installing a Hino diesel into a land cruiser possible. Reason why I am menioning this is because Hino is a well known transport truck sold in the united states and canada and is sold though toyota. It would make it easy for those people who live south of the border in the states to adapt this engine to the land cruisers tranny and have a source of parts that is normally unaviable for the land cruisers 4 and 6 cylinder diesel engines. My question is does anyone know where these kits are located online? A Hino parts counter rep said that he has heard of the adapter kit he does not know where to buy one. The price of the engine with all assesories runs $3,500 cdn.

Hino is partly owned by Toyota and was involved int he manufacture of the B and possibly H series diesels but they are supported by their own dealer networks and in my experience the Hino parts guys have no interest in working with an enthusiast doing an engine swap. Make sure you get the model and serial number of the truck your engine comes out of so you can lie to the parts guy when you need parts.

The Hino config on the 3.9l is very wide. I don't know if it wil fit between the frame rails. The turbo is way out there. It sure would be cool it if did fit. I believe they have an SAE 3 bellhousing. That won't work with any common 4x4 tranny with out an adapter, I don't think. They do use clutches with the same fine spline count as the B series and 1HZ trannys so you might be able to get away with a plate adapter. I'd plan on some custom motor mounts.

I'd be surprised if you find a 'kit' but this swap has potential to be cooler than the b3.9 Cummins.

Haryv,
the 3b is a varient of the hino engines. They had 13b, 14b, 15b and some of the turbo versions.

For your BJ60, most of these can bolt right in, no kit is needed.

Australia has lots of Landcruisers and lots of Hinos.
Many diesel shops work on diesel cars, trucks and 4x4 so any interchangeabilty such as with Diahatsu diesels would have been figured out long ago.

If kits exist, why hasnt anyone got one?;)

The 12 HT was built by Hino ( under caterpillar licence I've heard, but not sure)

size comparison

So...... how big is a Hino 3.9l compared to a Cummins 3.9l (or a toy 12 ht...) Most of us that talk about shoe-horning a diesel into our 60s know that a cummins 3.9 requires a spring over or a tall lift. I think that a shorter (height wise) diesel would be popular for those who don't want or need the extra lift height.

the reazon for a SO conversion in a 60 series with 4BT is the tall on crankcase ..
