I recently changed the PCV valve in my 1989 FJ-62. Ever since then when starting the motor chugs and sometimes dies. If I give the gas pedal a pump after starting it takes off and idles smooth with no further problems. This also only seems to occur after the vehicle has sat for more than a day. Any ideas?

Could this be caused by the PCV hose that feeds back into the air intake line not sealing over the PCV valve? Somebody has to have a suggestion:confused:

Lemme guess, new valve, but same old grommet? Look/feel for leaks around the new PCV. Those grommets get brittle, then deformed.

Does it just happen at start up? or after it's been running for a while too?

My first guess is a vacuum leak. Is there a good seal around the PCV valve? Try checking for hoses you inadvertently disconnected/damaged. A standard technique is to use a spray bottle to squirt around all the vacuum lines, and if the idle is affected, you've found the area of your leak.

It only happens for the first 5 seconds at start up. After that she runs like a dream.

Getting cold yet up in Price? (I don't know the area) If so, how about your cold start injector needing a little love? After a reread of your post, I keyed in on your mention of it only happening after sitting.

Hmmm it has cooled down a bit. Day time temps are in the high 70s right now and night time is in the low 50s. At what ambient air temp does the cold start injector become operational?
