Did i go too high?

I raised the front end of my Tacoma with coil-overs and noticed that I am getting some vibration at about 70mph.
It is intermittant, but vibrating more often than not.
I may have gone too high but now my truck sits leveler and looks better

SO

do I crank the C/O down or put in a front differential drop kit to (possibly) help with vibration issues and maybe extend the life of my CVs as welll?

BTW - my front end has an ARB and Warn 8K with steel cable.

The rear should be higher than the front ~1", and if you've gone over 3" of lift in the front, you're too high.

Forget the diff pivot (referred to as the drop), it won't do squat. How old are your CVs, have you checked to boots, is there any grease in the boots? An intermittant vibration like that sounds like the CV(s). Maybe take a pic from the front of the fins of the CV boots. If they're mashed together, you're cranked too high.

edit: Okay, that's right, you replaced the passenger side CV. Hmm, if you got it from Mr. T I'd suspect it was fine. So focus on the driver's side, but you also need to figure out how high you've gone.
 
Replaced BOTH complete axles about 2 weeks ago.

I made the mistake of not measuring before installing the C/O and now it is kind of a guessing game.

Also, my rear has extended shackles and AAL - the old lift blocks are in the bottom of the tool box - so I can't just say 1" higher in the back.

I have changed too many variables! :frown:
 
Well, then take some measurements for me. Tape measure to ground at wheel center to bottom of fender, and from wheel center to bottom of fender for front. Go ahead and do same for the rear, and we'll go from there.

And, did you get it aligned after the C/O? These things are so sensitive you can even throw off the alignment changing out CVs.

I measured from the center of the wheel to the bottom of the black fender at 24" for the front.
Rear from wheel center to fender is 25"

No alignment or recent tire balancing - those could be problems too.
 
I'll try to remember to check my before measurements tonight. I wouldn't worry about cranking them down until you have an alignment, because the alignment will change your front heights also.

Flatland, do you mind elaborating on this statement? I'm about to install a diff drop on my 4R and would like to learn your reasons for saying this. Thanks in advance.

The amount it "drops" is minuscule and doesn't really make any significant difference in your angles. More just a sort of gimmick than anything. All it really does it tilt your differential.

Looks like when I measured (with 265/75s) I only did so from the ground to the center of the bottom of the black fender. I got 35" on front and 37 rear at stock saggy height. So with your good hand, go measure to see where you are now. :D

Can I bother you to measure from the bottom center of the fender flair to the center of the hub in the front, both sides, since this dimention would remain constant regardless of tire size and inflation. (I have 255/85s)

I had a similar problem when I lifted my '99. I only cranked in 3" with the C/Os and was told it wouldn't be too steep of an angle for the CVs. Even with the 1" diff drop it still vibrated at any speed over 60mph. I think its just to much for the CVs. My cure was to take the diff drop back out and go to manual hubs.

I didn't have any vibration issues until I installed my C/Os (and new axles https://forum.ih8mud.com/95-gen-toyota-trucks/289550-help-siezed-shock-bolt.html ) and raised them, apparently, too high.

I can't justify the maunal hub conversion $$. For that much $$ I'd personally look into a SAS - getting rid of IFS and allowing more & easier lift.

BTW, lowered the front end about 3/4" and vibration is almost nonexistant - but I am getting the tires balanced too, which may help.

Yeah, that was too high. Mine are at 24 1/8 and I have a 3/4" BL. So taking yours down 3/4" should really help. You were probably close to 4" over stock :eek:
