So the fluid capacity of the PS system is between 3-4 quarts?

well, just drained my ATF (just the plug). Probably semi-hot. Got 4 qts and 10 oz. (Seems like it was a bit too ful beforehand per dipstick but not sure, cuz confused as to whether the level should be checked with engine on or off - see other thread...)
Also way more than the 2 qts mentioned in the FSM.
What's with that?
Can't even trust the Bible any more? :-\

My 442 usually drains 6+ quarts. When I had the pan off last fall to change a couple solinoids it took about 7.5 to fill it back up.

Ok, I just did the same thing on my 93 with the 442 tranny-- twice. The FSM says drain and refil should use 6.3 quarts.

The first time I did it I added six quarts and drove it around for a few miles. When I measured it (with the engine running, as per the FSM) it appeared to me to be really high. I then measured how much I got out, and it was only like 4.5 quarts.

This sort of freaked me out, so I did it again. (In retrospect, I should have driven around more first-- I hope I didn't just drain out my newly added fluid)

Anyway, this time I got like 6+ quarts out, and only added 5.5. This time when I measured it was right at the top of the high temp line. Or so I hope. I find it difficult to figure out where that line is reading-- cause there always seems to be a little fluid way up the dipstick. Does anybody else have this problem?

I have the same stupid problem with the oil dipstick.

Anyway, I now figure that the tranny was just low when I drained it the first time. On the plus side, the fluid looked really nice and red, didn't smell burnt at all, and had a nice minty taste.

Again, I am curious, has anyone else found that it takes less than 6.3 quarts to fill up the tranny after a pan drain and refill?

I have noticed the same thing, the little bit on the upper part of the dipstick is from the sides of the tube, there will be more after just filling via the tube, also but to a lesser extent if you repeatably pull the stick out several times, every time you pull it out it smears oil along the sides of the tube that the stick pick up again, the oil/fluid can also temporarily pool in the “S” bend until it drains back to the pan, all giving potentially false indications, you want to read where the fluid is solid across the stick on both sides
