so i just got my '74 fj40.(love my cruiser) :D it's got a 2F engine with all the cali smog stuff all over it...fuel rail, smog pump, vacuum lines everywhere. it might even have a cali dizzy but i have no clue how to tell. i know getting rid of all the emissions crap will help in a number of ways but i don't know much about what i'm doing. i've got an air filter that sits off to the left of the carb with a huge vacuum line leading directly to the smog pump...not sure if i'll need to replace this.

so i guess my question is: how exactly do i go about desmogging the 2F...what should be done first...what will i need to replace....what should i watch out for.

Thx for helping a nuby out!

1. check the technical links near at the top of the page - there are schematics for an 84 2F desmog.
2. buy the factory emissions manual - so you will know what you'll be getting rid of and where all the vacuum lines are suppose to go.
3. use the search function - plenty of good info on how others have done this properly

Good luck.

What you call "emissions crap" is actually first generation electromechanical engine control. If it works, removing it may actually make it run worse and get worse fuel economy. If it doesn't work, removing it won't change much, but it won't run as well as it should. Just plugging the EGR vacuum line will be the easiest way to get slightly better perfromance and economy.

If you want it to run properly withought the engine control stuff, get a non USA carb and Non USA distributor.

Take all the hose crap out, get a Man-a-fre header for about $150, plug all those little hose bastards! Then get a MSD box for iginition control. If the hose line doesn't qualify as fuel, oil, or coolant, you don't need it.

There are purists squirming in their seats right now! If you plan to ever sell you rig, keep a box for all of the emissions crap.

Purist= A metal plate that blocks exhaust flow to reheat the emissions actually improves mileage.

Just razing ya! Honestly, the emission control of the 70's was a joke. Get a new cat conv. and keep your engine tuned. It will run excellent and you can acheive better mileage by more efficent use of fuel. The electronic MSD 6A iginition will go along way in accomplishing this. Your dist. will be fine as the electronics do not rely on vaccum. A Weber (gasp!) carb will give more power, but only very slightly. The Ainsin Carb will do fine. Running 32" wheels, I get about 16 around town and 19 on the highway. With the higher ratio rear end, I can easily do 70 to whatever I want to risk my life with.

Keep it simple...the more crap there, the more that can go wrong. You only really lose about 1 mpg with the air pump pulley, but there is more there to gain. Regardless, if you engine is not in tune and you are losing compression, desmogging or smogging will not help.

Congrats on your cruiser.
