I'm looking for a used desktop CNC machine mostly for cutting aluminum. I think a cnc capable of 12" x 12" x 4" would be fine for what we want to do. I am curious what you guys would recommend. I would like to keep the cost low so used is definitely a possibility. My friend and I will be drafting using Inventor Pro.

What do you want to do with it? What size cutters do you want to use?

I have a Syil X4 Plus.

We want to start prototyping aftermarket RC parts, but to begin with chassis pieces in aluminum, and perhaps delrin. Eventually I would like to incorporate a lathe as well. I'm really just looking for a super basic 3-axis setup. I used one in highschool which was 12 years ago in shop class, alot has changed since then I'm sure.

Writing G-code is all the same. I wrote my first CNC program in 1986.

How much do you want to spend?

I think we will be able to swing about $2500 to $3000. Maybe a little more. We're still hammering out the details.

For your budget you're likely to find full-sized CNC kneemills like a Bridgeport Boss or V2XT, or Tree Journeyman series machines. I have a Bport V2XT but I used to run a Tree Journeyman 325. Both will run RC parts and much more if you have the room. Yes, they require 3 phase power. I run my Bport on a rotary phase convertor based on an old 20hp motor (I have a couple machines with 15hp motors - had to go big to handle them). The Tree I used to run was also on a rotary phase convertor until we got 3 phase in the shop.

On sizing, make sure you have enough travel for tooling and hold down fixtures.

BTW at that size you are talking about an expensive machine.
