Good evening..
I have a 1994 LC and found myself in a deep hole yesterday afternoon with water engulfing the the back 3rd of the truck for about 2-3 minutes. I got out ok and spent the rest of the evening taking seats and carpet out. I noticed gear oil on the driveway this morning and found that it's leaking at the rear pinion seal. I changed the gear oil this afternoon and it's still leaking. It wasn't leaking before this at all. Have I ruined the seal or is something pushing the oil out? I've read about pressure from stopped up diff breathers needing to be unclogged but don't know exactly where or what they are. I'm not quite sure where to go from here.
Thanks, Jess

You probably got mud and grit in the seal. No big deal, just get a new one. There is a procedure for a pinion seal in the FSM you should pay attention to. If you're are not confident, go see Ken @gearinstalls.com

He is 20 minutes away.

And one other thing. You likely have water mixed in your gear oil. So even before you replace the seal, drain the axle and replace the gear oil with inexpensive gear oil to drive it around and flush out the water. It may take a couple of drain/fills to do this.

Rather than cleaning the breather, you should replace it with a fuel hose and run it all the way into your engine compartment and top with a fuel filter. This works very well to prevent future water intrusion.
