Hi Guys,

We haven't posted on here much, so forgive me if this is in the wrong section.

As all of you are probably painfully aware... the FJ40 metal dash tends to get hacked up pretty bad over the course of its life. People install switches, remove them, cut in radio bezels, remove them, etc... before you know it there isn't much left to the dash. This can make replacement or additions of switches in the future very problematic.

Obviously, you can weld in a patch panel or fill holes in and then spend hours sanding and grinding to get it back to spec. This is how we do it on our restoration projects.

But we feel there is also a need for people wanting a clean slate on their dash but aren't ready to commit the time and money to do a full repair. This might be for a trail rig or a daily driver.

To meet this need, we developed a simple kit that allows you to have a new platform to mount your switches where you want them.

It's aluminum plate, that we have CNC cut to match the lines and contours of the dash. You can leave it raw, paint it or hydrodip it. It can be used as a really nice looking accent trim piece for your dash - we've done a few in a gloss metallic grey as an accent on a solid color tub.

The kit also includes 24 #4 x 3/8" stainless screws to help assist installation.

Installation is simple:
  1. Remove all old switches/gauges.
  2. Clean underneath dash surface. Any rust or bare metal should be treated with a rust stop product.
  3. Place plates on dash, position with masking tape.
  4. Use a punch to set a where you want screws. We don't predrill holes in the plate, just in case there's a hole in your dash that would interfere with our screw placement.
  5. Drill pilot holes for screws.
  6. Install screws. We suggest installing the screws by hand, stainless screws are brittle and can be over torqued easily.
  7. Congrats - you may now start reinstalling switches where you want them!
Let me know if you've got questions.

Looks great, thanks for posting it. You may want to post a few sets in the Classifieds section with a super sweet price "sample price" so people can get their hands on them and provide everyone with their feedback. Good luck with the sales.

Great idea! A lot of people complain about hacked radio opening. Maybe extend that mid section down to cover that area?

Good idea! They are available on our website right now - thelandcruisershop.com

use the code ih8mud for 10% off anything including the kit.

We were trying to match the factory contours of the dash - maybe a 4th piece should be made for the lower part... good idea.

We've been selling a surprising number of these kits. The decision was easy to step up our game and release a v2 version.

Changes include:
  1. Now Laser Cut rather than cut on a CNC Router. Amazing edge quality now (not that it wasn't pretty good before.)
  2. We are now including 2 pieces that mount along the bottom of the dash as well, filling in any areas where someone may have hacked the dash up for a radio or CB. (Based on the above feedback from Mud members!)
  3. The parts are now Laser Cut with protective sheeting applied, to increased resistance to scratches while being transported.
  4. Due to the Laser Cutting, we are able to have tighter tolerances and curves on the panels, making them fit even more nicely!
Available now on our website!

For those wanting a clean look, this is the kit. However, I am curious as to how they affix to the existing dash. Just speaking for the next owner that may want to restore it.

Good luck!
There are a variety of options - we prefer 3M double sided tape as it is non-destructive and easy to remove for future owners.
