dash pad change

If you have an FSM to guide you, it is quite simple. If not, start by pulling the steering wheel and the instrument and heater control fascia. Disconnect the speedo cable and electrical connectors behind the instrument panel and remove that panel completely. There are a couple of slightly hidden screws and nuts that make the job interesting but when you start pulling from one side and work your way across the dash it becomes pretty obvious where everything is. Take your time and don't force things apart. When you have the right screws and nuts removed the pad comes off easily.
No, you don't have to remove it but it sure makes the job much, much easier, IMO. A puller makes that portion of the job much easier, too, but may not be necessary. Pull the steering wheel pad, it is a press fit on a 62, not sure about a 60 pad, and loosen the big 19mm? nut that holds the wheel to the steering post but leave the nut on the last couple of threads. Rock the steering wheel with both hands back and forth while pulling it towards you. If it comes off the nut will prevent it from coming off suddenly and hitting you in the face. It's a good idea to mark the wheel and the post for replacing the wheel in the same place.75pinz said:

You don't have to remove the wheel. I purchased a pad on ebay, and didn't need to, and found no problems not. Like has been said, be VERY careful with the a/c ducts. They are snapped into the pad, and mine were very difficult to remove. As a matter of fact, I busted the outer casing on two of the vents (the outer two). Nothing a little epoxy couldn't fix and is still fine to this day. Anyways, take out the entire lower dash so you can get to the screws and clips holding it onto the firewall. Its a pretty easy job, just time consuming, so be patient. No harder than changing brake pads.
I recently did one and it was pretty easy....
There are four (4) 10mm nuts...One to the left of the cluster in the corner, one just to the left of the radio, one just to the right of the glove box and one in the corner to the right of the glove box..The are also two (2) clips almost directly in the center of the dashboard close to the window (you will see those when the radio is out)
I also did not pull the steering wheel, but I have to believe it would make thinsg easier...I did pull-out the speedo-cluster, the radio, the small compartment under the radio, the facing over the heat/defrost switches, etc and the glove box.
I am not handy at all (I mean like the worst on the board), but it was very easy. For me, the hardest part was getting the speedo clipped back-in...My hands were way too big and I had to <sob> ask my girlfriend for help...
If you need it, I can take a picture of the one I removed...It will show you the exact placement of the bolts...

I will take a picture of the dash and everything else that needs to be disconnected (I have the cluster and the heater facing off of my parts truck also)

horrible only so much that i can do to help preserve my d.pad, ive had my pig for 3 years now and i just got my first d.crack last may that turned into a huge tear last month! arrrrrrgh!

I use those gay reflecto fold out things.

so do i man , along with white terry cloth towels on the dash and i park in the shade every time i get , im fighting a uphill battle bro !
