I am having the beginnings of an idea of a center dash area layout for Heather's 80. I am planning on a HAM radio and CB. I need to build the coms space a little flexible because CBs and it seems HAM radios as well range in size. I had hoped to find a CB and HAM both in single DIN size and work with a double DIN space. This would make coms and radio/nav interchangeable.

Anyone familiar with specifics about mounting HAM radios? Heat issues?

This sort of what you have in mind? :D

There's nothing that specific about mounting a HAM until you pick the exact model. Some have the face plate integrated to the head, others (like mine) are detached. As for heat, same rules as a CB head unit apply.

^^ X2, using the detachable face plate unit, can stash it most anywhere (mine is passenger rear quarter panel), mount the faceplate most anywhere. Mine is fairly small and compact, no where near the size of a single DIN unit, maybe 1/2-2/3rds the size (width).

I put a Kenwood unit w/GPS double DIN in the space, allows rear camera viewing and DVD player, etc...

FWIW, I have the Yaeso FTM350-R which also has a detachable face plate. I mounted the head unit inside my center console and the face plate on a leido flexible arm.

Wherever you put the radio controls, make sure it's accessible by both driver and passenger, and that the driver doesn't have to lean over to reach it.

We will need to see pictures for all eventually! :)
