Dash “blank” not blank? (1 Viewer)

Hey folks - noob question:
I’m about to pull apart the dash and replace the radio with a CarPlay receiver.
I’m used to my 80, where anything that has a blank in the dash has space behind it, but in prelim researching, doesn’t look like this area is actually accessible/usable for anything. If not, what was it for?

If you pull that blank off you will find a functioning button underneath.

Want to say it was rear ac high/low fan speed toggle for vehicles without the controls in the back.

Close, I believe it was used for “Rear Heat” on vehicles that did not come with Rear AC.
