I was looking into putting some D44's in my 72 FJ40. I'm looking at old Scout II's as a source for these axles. Is this a good way to go? Thanks for your time.

IMO, you gain zero for strength with a D44...

See the FAQ link for the 40/45 trucks in Cruiser Tech....one of those discusses axle upgrades.

I would put the effort in for a D60, not a D44...

Why?

I guess if you want to you can, but I would not waste the resources on something like that.

Good luck!

I spent some time with a D44 that's going in my T-100. It has some advantages. Mostly it's easy to turn the axles and gearing choices are plentiful. Hi steer parts are also a bit cheaper. Mostly not worth the strength downgrade in an FJ-40

I put a 44 in front and a 12 bolt in the rear. They were part of a package deal, so I'm not complaining. They work great in FL, I do more beach crawling than rock crawling; but the board is right, not much of an upgrade. Mine was more of a drive train specified swap rather than an upgrade.

If you have any other questions, like, say, how high NOT to set the pinion, let me know.

You wouldn't by chance be running a 700R4 would you?

Hey thanks for all the good imput. No I'm not running a 700R4. Thanks again. Yoder

Good. You're so much better off than you may ever know.
