Background: I have a '93 GMC 3500 Vandura dually cube van for a tow rig (hey, it was free and it drove home under its own power). 11K miles later I smoked the 4L80e auto trans my last trip from NJ to IN. Bought another 4L80e but from a 4x4; included a Dana 300 t-case adapter.

Original plan was to convert the 4x4 trans to 2wd by combining the two. The 4x4 trans was supposed to have very low mileage and is ASSUMED to not need a rebuild. It is also ASSUMED that the original smoked trans is too far gone to rebuild. Smoked trans has been reman'd once already according to the sticker on the side.

But an alternative might be to leave the 4x4 trans as is and couple a d300 to it then shorten the driveshaft to mate to the t-case. The result would be a low range for manuvering the van and trailer in tight spaces or when moving a heavy load in and out of steep driveways. I could also connect a hydraulic pump to the front output of the t-case to be used with the t-case in "front dig" mode. Hydraulic pump to be used to power whatever I dream up as part of the mobile shop in the back of the van. Could also power a winch on the trailer or the tilt deck on the trailer. Not interested in a 4x4 conversion on the van though! :)

Third option is to sell the 4x4 trans on Ebay (got it for a good price so I should make a little coin in the sale). Then get the smoked trans rebuilt, if possible.

So, after the long story, my question becomes: What is the CGVW rating of a Dana 300 t-case? Will it stand up to my 10K lb van plus 6-7K Cruiser/trailer?

Or have I been standing too close to the crack pipe again? :D

TIA,
Nick Jennings
