Hello all.
I have been lurking here on the forum for a few years, drooling over 70 series but never posting.
About a year and a half ago, after a nice, long, car related hospital vacation, I was able to get my hands on a 1988 JDM BJ74 for an incredibly good price (have wanted a diesel 70 since I was a kid in Canada doing Quick lube jobs at a Toyota dealer and trying to keep myself from drooling all over the BJ70 that the manager had...). Well, now my little BJ74 needs help, and I must ask for advice.
I need to find a replacement cylinder head for my 13B-T, as mine has gouges in the combustion face of the #4 cylinder, where both valves said hello to Mr. Piston...Short version - thermostat went, idiot driver (me) didn't notice in time and she overheated. Changed water pump and thermostat and noticed very low power and coolant loss with no signs of leaks....idiot driver kept driving after local mechanic told him to run lots of seafoam to clean the injectors, which must be the problem, right? Hydro-locked 13B-T engine...pulled oil drain and got 2+ gallons of coolant before oil.....finally went to change head gasket and found bent intake push rod and shredded valves in #4 cylinder...
After a few months of searching, all I can find are new heads in the $1500 and up price range (way out of my range). Repairs are estimated at over $1000 plus shipping..Used heads are proving impossible to locate anywhere (Africa, Australia, Japan, India, China, UAE...nothing).
However, I can buy new heads for a 13B all day long for less than $200.
I know the parts catalogs specify the 11101-58030 or 11101-58031 heads, but the gaskets and most of the other parts are interchangeable.
I am wondering if I can us a 13B head on my 13B-T engine.
Anybody know if this is possible?
I have all the other replacement parts that I need (liners, pistons, valves, etc), just trying to find an affordable way to get my lovely little truck back on the Montana roads.
Thanks for any input you can provide. - Matthew
