This is my first Post to the forum. In fact I am new to land cruisers. Got the itch for one a few weeks ago so I bought one. Its giving me trouble running and I still love it, can't wait to get it running right. I am a fair shade tree mechanic and have had many vehicles, but never a toyota, and I need some help diagnosing the problem

The truck starts and runs great, a little more slugish than normal I think, but OK. It will idle and run great for a few hours of driving. never chokes out or dies. It does use alot of fuel. All the sudden it will choke out and studder violently when in gear driving and eventualy won't go any more, although it will sit and Idle nicley. After letting it sit for 4 or 5 hours it will crank and drive normal again.

Things I have checked

Vacum if tight
compression is between 140 and 150 psi per cylinder
plugs are good and wires are new

Any ideas, any good land cruiser mechanics in Birmingham, AL?

You just bought it?

start by changing all your filters and gear lube, engine oil, grease everything..u-joints,tie rod ends.

cap, rotor,plugs..valve adjustment(gotta do that one myself)

i would start with a fuel filter, dirt can settle in a filter, then as you drive it longer,it can end up clogging up.

welcome and hope it works out for you.

after you do what 2badfjs said, get the factory manuals. you can go to birfield.com and download one of the manuals, the emissions manual you'll have to buy, still have not found one on the internet yet. the 2f manual you can get at birfield but its an older version, the maintenance and procedures you can get a birfield also.

ditto on the fuel filter

All done

All done, except the valves. not brave enough yet. I have no improvment yet. I did notice this morning that when the car is pushing or pulling really hard starting, I have no power to go. Does anyone think it may be my Carb?

It appears that MY secondary Jet has not worked in a while. It is very clean compared to the primary. I do not see the diaphram move when I increase the RPMs. when I turn the secondary stem it gets air and blows fuel. I do not see where the diaphram gets its vacum. should the push tab for the diaphram to the butterfly be on top or bottom of the carb peice?

are there any diagrams of this carburator on the internet?

It's common for the secondary throat to be clean compared to the primary. I don't think it's necessarily a sign of a bad secondary. The secondary diaphragm gets its vacuum from a passage inside the carb, so there are no external vacuum lines that you can use to check whether it's still good or not.

If you feel a lag between when you push the gas pedal and when the truck starts to accelerate, it may be a bad accelerator pump. The pump is on the side of the carb closest to the passenger side. The shaft of the pump sticks up through a rubber boot on the carb. You should be able to look into the primary throat and see a stream of gas when you actuate the pump by hand.

The best diagrams for the carb are in the 2F Engine manual. I'm not aware of any on the internet.

I get lots of fuel in my primary when I rev the motor. I opened up the top yesterday, took out both of the jets and cleaned real good inside. all inall it was pretty clean. I just could not get the secondary to spit fuel unless I reved the motor and worked the butterfly at the same time. the diaghram never moves it self, and it looks like the tabs are switched to move the butterfly if it did work. Man I need pictures. I ordered a few manuals. there were none in town.

Thanks for the Help, it makes it alot easier to figure the problem.
