The residual valve is a pressure check valve that maintains pressure (2lbs for disc 10lb for drum IIRC) on the caliper side of the circuit. Normally it sits in line after the master cylinder before the line splits to go to each caliper.

In a quick look in the link you posted for the instructions it looks like the line goes from your existing brake cylinder to the cutting brake to the calipers. It doesn't require auxillary pressure from the other master does it? I wouldn't think so, but you never know I guess.

Seems the pressure created with your foot would be higher and more volume than by the levers with your hands?
