Hi Guys,

I'm making a custom airbox and snorkel for my HZJ79, the safari snorkel by admission from Safari themselves does not flow enough air to feed the 1HZ with turbo boosting over 10PSI, so I need to make a system that is as non restrictive as possible.

I have purchased 6 feet of 4 inch aluminum tubing and 4 inch elbows for routing, but now I need to figure out what to do about the airbox. I feel that the factory airbox is too restrictive and it is not as waterproof as I want, not matter what I do I always get a little seapage when in water - and I want to eliminate that. I'll also be running a hi flow cyclonic donaldson prefilter mushroom on top of the snorkel to help eliminate contaminates, after using one for 3 years I am sold on how well they work at keep the internal filter clean.

So, my plans are to make a custom aliminum box that will house the filter, rectangular, hinged and sealed with lock downs like Zoltans, so what are everyones thoughts on the type of filter? K and N are supposedly junk so I wont use one, I ordered a UNI filter like Zoltans for the time being, but still have my doubts on how well it will work. I can make any design for the airfilter housing so anything is possible - any recommendations? Anything off another type of truck I could use = like off a hino?

Thanks

Louis

They have a new 4 inch snorkel due out very soon, I suppose it is to fix this problem.

Yes I have seen it and talked to ARB about it, although the snorkel will flow well I don't think it will flow well for 15 pounds boost - iirc I think they said it wouldnt flow well for 15 pounds either. And, I think the toy airbox might be too restrictive as well.

for a long time i was threatening to Wayne to run the air intake and the exhaust to the back of the cab and then straight up like a peterbuilt

exhaust on the passenger side, intake on the drivers

or should i say exhaust on the right, intake on the left

of course i also was going to do a tailpipe turbo - mounted in a box right behind the cab

I was going to fab up a rectangular box for a home air conditioning filter integral with the headache rack as a prefilter

Louis try the International dealer on Sheffield, we had an International 466 with a very similar air filter in diameter although much deeper as I recall, circa 1986 I think it was a 4700 series, ask to look through their catalogues maybe they have something you can adapt.

The 1fz 7x series have a bigger lid and box intake pipe than the fj, hzj and hdj , but I Spode if that's nit big enough it'll have to be custom

it dosnt look much bigger but the left side one 1fz happily slides over the diesel box
this is my fz end of the lid chopped of for turbo but sized next to diesel lid

Thanks for the pics Clint, seems pretty obvious that the diesel piping is pretty restrictive.

Capitalguy - I will try the tractor dealer - good idea.

Louis,

Make sure you buy some filter oil too they come pre oiled but since its sacrificing filtration for air flow its a good idea to clean and re oil often.

I usually do this after every run in a dusty environment or b4 a comp.

Good luck with it mate

PS; If you need any more pics of my setup let me know and ill snap some new ones as ive changed a few things.

Yes! You must have been reading my mind, was just editing the video last night! Just need to tack a couple pieces of aluminum and it's done. Build video coming soon!

I know I am in the 70 forum but I like reading stuff here...anyways I used a large filter cansiter from a cab forward hino on my turboed 81BJ60...a little large! I will try and post up a pic soon. The big downside is that the filter costs $75 and it sits a little high for the hood to close all the way.
I am using 3 inch pipe for my snorkel btw.
