I am considering having the front half of the rusty andl leaky exhaust of my 62 replaced with a custom exhaust. Will a good muffler shop have any trouble fabbing the mounts/bungs for the O2 sensors?

Also, is there anything that can be done about the funky y-pipe that crosses under the frame on the driver's side? I know some guys have gone to a single cat system, but that isn't a viable option in the Peoples Republic of California.

Many thanks.

Usually they will cut out the old bungs and weld them into the new pipe. They can also get new OEM style bungs. Not sure about CA but run 2 pipes to a dbl cat then one pipe out the back. Search here and the 3FE list.

Forgive my ignorance but I thought you were allowed to replace a failing exhaust system on a vhicle in the PRC. And since modern cats are much more effecient a single cat should be better since you would have both a more advanced cat and quicker light off.

You are probably right about a newer, single cat providing better performance, but the smog check guys will be looking for two cats. If they don't see two, it will fail the visual.
