Does anyone know whether the current model petrol engine 70 series vehicles are available for sale and registration (not export) within any of the European Union member states?

The reason I ask is that I have a 2010 GRJ71 (with the 1GR-FE 4L V6 petrol engine) purchased here in the UAE and I'm trying to figure out whether it is worthwhile bringing it with me when I relocate to France within the next few months. To register this vehicle in France as a personal import I will need, amongst other things, an EU certificate of conformity, hence my question above.

Officially the 70 series isn't sold in Europe since 2002 i believe. Could be 2001 too. So the GRJ series is probably a no go. The HZJ's are still available thru grey import, those are no problem to import.

There might be a loophole or something, but you need to talk to a Frenchman to be sure. PM Dunkane here on the board, he is French and might know more.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately this is what I expected.

Is the German company you mention called Cruiser-Connection? I see from their website that they do a Euro V exhaust emissions system for the 1HZ engine, so perhaps they do the 1GR-FE as well.

Slightly different question: does anyone know of Toyota vehicles with the 1GR-FE engine that are officially imported (i.e. not grey imports from the Middle East or Africa) into and sold in the EU? I'm thinking Prado, FJ Cruiser, Tacoma, Tundra etc.

Nope!! In germany is a compagnie that converts them to euro 4 an 5 emmision norms...
So grey import but legal...

He wasn't asking about the diesels... GRJ7# is equiped with a V6 gas/petrol engine which was never imported here. However there are Prado 120's and grey import FJ cruisers here. Same engine and i would think same emmisions.
You never know if a GRJ7# would be allowed. But by pulling the right strings it might very well be. You need to know the right people in France, that's for sure.
Try the French forum, it's linked in the clubhouse section. They might "know somebody who knows somebody".

Oh and don't forget, gas is over $5 a gallon here...

I think I can partially answer one of my own questions. A bit of googling has revealed that one of the models of the Landcruiser officially imported and on sale in Poland has the 1GR-FE engine. So at some point the 1GR-FE engine must have been tested for EU compliance. This gives me some hope. (The Polish Landcruiser models look to be the equivalent of the Prado here in the UAE.)
