I have been restoring the old 12' Jon boat and outboard that has been out of service for 30 years. I remember an episode of Pawn Stars
when Rick told Cory and Chumley "We do not buy boats, they are just big holes in the water to toss money into."
Well I was begging to differ until one thing lead to another. And another. Rick was right.
No clue what I have into it so far, but the 7.5 horse Chrysler runs like I remember and just ordered one of the last props on the planet
for it. $211.

I bought a boat just before COVID. Put a bunch of money into and sold it in the middle of COVID. I made $5k after all expenses!

That will never happen again...

I bought a 12' jon boat from a friend back in 2011. Less than a year old. Picked up a trailer cheap to modify to tow it around the forest with 15" wheels. Came with a Nissan 9.8 four stroke motor used once. Not sure I would call it a money pit. Just never used it. Jon boat sits upside down on the trailer with a tarp over it. The motor sits in a garage on the stand my friend made taking up space. Only purpose the boat serves is I have hard food under it for a couple of feral cats that keep the rodents out my RV area. New neighbour from a few years ago has a giant palm tree she doesn't keep trimmed. Unfortunately we now have flying rats (pigeons) in the neighborhood. Had the house paint this spring and it's now marked with bird $hit.

I am picturing Jakes Corner with Elk, Pine trees, cats, but Palm trees and Pigeons are eluding my comprehension.

Anyone here a guru on Toyota front diffs? Me weirdo Japan rig seems it might have a Hilux or Land cruiser ifs and I'm wondering if I can swap out the diff for a locker like a 9.5 or whatever it'll fit. What'd be the easiest identifying feature?

Question about oil changes here in the southwest. I've always used Castrol full synthetic oil. Noticed the bottles now said 10,000 mile protection. Is anyone changing their oil at 10,000 with the filter in between? Been doing a full oil change every 5,000 miles. Most miles are highway and the average 5,000 a year on our two DD. Everything thing else gets far less miles.

I will do 10k oil/filter changes if I'm doing it more than once a year, most of the online wisdom says x mileage OR 6 months, whichever is first. Time is an enemy to oil as much as mileage. Oil can actually get more contaminated in cars that see less usage, because the condensation and fuel doesn't get cooked out on short drives. In my cars that see less mileage per year, I do 5k O&F changes.

FWIW the oil I use says it's good for 20k changes, 10k oil is considered pretty pedestrian these days.

I was trained young to do 3000 religiously, and can’t bring myself to do otherwise, despite what the bottles say.

Unlike oil in refrigeration units oil in auto engines doesn't mix with water. If your vehicle doesn't get used much and worries about condensation just crack the drain plug while the engine cold. If there is water that's will come out first. Be curious if anyone tries it and has any water present.

I'm going continue to change the oil at the 5K mile maintenance light my twenty first century Toyotas. Not concerned about the six months. Been working so far and the extra cost of the oil going average around $25 a year. The real work is the skid plate and canister for the filter. Just changing the filter every 5K miles and not the oil wouldn't save much on the labor involved.

I also park my vehicles in the garage. I still occasionally get water and/or steam out of the tailpipe, which means there's condensation happening. I'm not saying the tailpipe water is the same as condensation in the oil, just pointing out that condensation is happening in the vehicle. If you drive the car and there's any humidity in the air, it's going directly into the combustion chamber. Maybe it all goes out the tailpipe, maybe some gets by the rings and into the oil. Other contaminates are fuel, and soot, acids and other crap created by combustion, and parking in the garage doesn't prevent any of that from going through the rings and into the oil.

Oil and water can mix under certain conditions, it's called an emulsion. Dunno if that happens in engines or not. Dunno if we have a real issue with water condensing in engines in the Phoenix area or Arizona at all. Dunno how long it takes to contaminate oil enough to cause issues, whether the contamination is water or fuel or other stuff. Dunno if oil rated for 20k miles is somehow immune to contaminants. Logic says older and/or worn engines will get contaminated quicker. 3000 mile oil changes were standard in the mid to latter half of the last century, likely due to looser tolerances and lower-quality materials then what are standard today, not to mention the widespread adoption of fuel injection. Nowadays most car manufacturers recommend 5k maintenance schedules, and some go longer than that. Some cars monitor the use conditions, including elapsed time, and pop up a maintenance reminder based on that. I don't think any cars have sensors to detect actual oil contamination levels, but what do I know? I doubt any schedule, whether general or generated by the ECU, can take every variable into account. 5k/6mo seems designed to be adequate for just about all (modern) vehicles in just about all conditions. Can you go longer? Probably, and if you have your oil tested for contaminants, lubricity, viscosity, and whatever other properties are pertinent you could probably extend your service intervals significantly, depending on your situation. If you're not going to those extremes, then basing your oil change intervals on both mileage and time is a safe bet.

We took the '92 out for an all-day cruise last weekend into some of the more remote corners of the western Mogollon Rim. Found some rare, interesting creatures. Cool breeze, smooth ride, big bright greenhouse - what a pleasant way to explore.

Not sure if you were on FR300 but if you were how much of it is paved now?

Believe west of SR89A is considered west Mogollon Rim. I can tell you the end of the 300 road that ends at SR87 is not paved. Think the side off of SR260 that's paved. Haven't been at that end for a long time. Remember a few miles were paved. Could be paved to the turn off to Woods Canyon Lake now.
