Cruiser Dan...

I have an 85 FJ-60. I brought it into the dealership to have the gas tank recall work done last Tuesday. After the work was completed, I noticed the gas gauge was no longer working. I called the dealership and they asked me to bring it back on Friday.

Well, on Wednesday, it started working again. I called the dealership and asked them if they would like to cancel the scheduled visit and put it on record, but they said to bring the vehicle in. I did and it worked through this weekend.

Last night, the gauge quit working again. I phoned the service department and told them the problem. They did not return my call, so I called back. The Service Department mngr said they were "scratching their heads"...Must have been a "coincidence" that the sending unit quit at the same time. They said they could "price me a new unit"...Hmmm, I told them I had a hard time believing the coincidence scenario

I asked them if they could do a test to the sending unit and they said they would call me back at home...Still no call.

I had ZERO problems before they dug into the tank. Is there anything I can do? To me, a working gas gauge is a cool feature and I would really miss it!

Any help would be great,

Dan

Make sure it's not just the contacts--pull up your carpet in the back cargo area (floor) and open the panel in the middle of the floor. Make sure that the contact there is good.

The wire in my truck was yanked, didn't work right until I disconnected that contact, removed the corrosion, and reattached.

Good luck.

cruiserhunter... do a search for Fuel Tank Recall and you should find what you need. Basically, Toyota did a recall back around 1991 and dealerships will still honor the recall (somewhat reluctantly) if it has never been done.

With the search, you should find the number you need to call. It is Toyota of America... they are nice folks. Good luck.

Dan... you might just need to clean the contacts on the gauge. I have never done it, but others here have. They should chime in.

EDIT: I told you they'd chime in.

FYI: C-Dan is in the middle of a big inventory project and isn't lurking very much - you might send hem the question by PM.

corroded contacts ???

Clean'em, then apply a liberal coating of dielectric grease. Same stuff you should be using on your rotor under the dizzy cap and on your spark plug boots. Satisfactory substitute is "bulb grease" found even at Wally-Mart in the auto replacement bulb section.

I use it on *all* my electrical contacts, including battery posts.

Might help,
Cahil

i am having the fuel tank recall work done right now and my sending unit basically fell apart when the old tank was removed. it's not far-fetched at all that yours has now failed.

i also got to get a new spare tire unit cause mine was frozen and rusted solid

call dealer with vin for recall

do a search its something like "1991 recall"
