Well, after a short burst of running rough, the temp shot through the roof. Off to the mechanic - cracked head, through the pre-combustion chamber in number 3. 
$3700 (AUS $$) later..... fortunately it happened a few days short of the statutory 3 month dealer warranty expiring and the Toyota dealer paid for the lot.
(even though they wanted me to drive it 350km so they could 'have a look')
Apparently the head is currently on it's fourth revision to stop this happenning, the casting is paper thin in that area.
It seems to be more of a problem on the TD autos - maybe more heat in the motor because of the trans cooler?
it also appears that Toyota weren't going to argue much - maybe fixing this problem on a case by case is much cheaper than a world wide recall.
