Those types of cracks are quite common on the older pickups that run bigger tires. The common fix is a frame plate between the steering box and the frame that helps spread out the load. Not really that tough of a job to do.

There are plates available for the pickups, have never seen one for an 80. Not all that tough to make one though.
 
Yeah i'm going to rebuild my steering box and have this fixed at the same time.
 
Al. with the 37s you are running I would plate both sides of the frame and sleeve between them. This will make it bullet proof. It will take a little work, but far better than just welding up the cracks, this will just cause stress to move to a different location.
