Just because it doesn't meet your personal preferences doesn't mean it's a "flaw."

TRUE. VERY TRUE. POOR choice of words. Sorry.

I think I reacted with that because previous models offered both systems.

It's great that there will be a bunch of detailed coverage on this awesome Toyota vehicle! In Trails, you get the spectator perspective, in 4WD Toyota Owner you get the Toyota test driver's account, and the two add up to the whole package!

It's awesome to read it--Joe wrote 2,653 words of text that really get into what it is like to drive the FJ Cruiser--and 23 photos. Here's one that we didn't publish, but is a killer Rubicon shot, showing Bill Burke spotting Joe and spectators watching the Voodoo Blue FJ crawl up one tough section with wheels flinging dirt:

Cheers and happy new year!

This is incorrect, at least as far as Cruisers are concerned. Once TRAC was offered in the 100, the rear locker was removed. Toyota never offered the two at the same time in any Crusier. Sure, you could get an aftermarket ARB locker, but that is not "as built" by Toyota.

There, picked my nit for today... :flipoff2:

2004 Tacoma 4WD TRD Limited (with A-TRAC and locking rear diff)

(Not sure about the 2005 redesigned Taco)

So probably a dumb question but what exactly is the difference between TRAC and A-TRAC? It appears as if the A-TRAC is optional like the rear locker from This post: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showpost.php?p=926952&postcount=8

Does that mean if i buy the base model with a locker I don't get the good traction control system?

A-TRAC and TRAC are 2 shorts of the system's name Active-Trac.

chwtoy,
I believe ATRAC is standard on all models. ATRAC/VSC is standard fare on all the trucks on this platform.

The ATRAC looks good on the FJC, really aggressive- I wonder if it is a software improvement or if they went with 3 sensors - I guess it would offically be ATRAC III at that point...

3rd gen 4R's have ATRAC
100's have ATRAC II
4R/GX have ATRAC II+
and now the FJC has either
uber-ATRAC II or III hehe.

Well the combo of ATRAC and locker in a factory pkg is great. The platform is great, best IFS SUV for wheeling I will throw money on it.

It will give the H3 a run for sure in a more reliable pkg. Only limitation is 35's wont fit w/o some work...

I have some issues with the ergonomics/greenhouse (more house than green- if you know what I mean. little stingy on glass...) but I'm excited to see them on the trails, can't wait!

This is what I understood too, but how do you explain the individual line item under "brake control" as seen in the attachment below? Which is taken directly from the FSM.

INTERESTING! Maybe they use A-TRAC on the models you can switch it off? TRAC = no turn off? Interesting.

Or maybe A is for a model equipped with a rear locker working in conjunction.

Not that this is much help but I did Google "TRAC Toyota" and apparently that is what they abbreviate their rental car program with as in Toyota Rent A Car. I also came across this: www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpcontainers/do/vdp/articleId=108557/pageNumber=1 which does refer to the A-TRAC as optional, but then I try not to read too much into those car review web sites...

<EDIT>

Ok this sounds better, or worse depending on how you look at it...

From here: http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=532&highlight=trac

The TRAC system is the every day traction control system for icy roads and such. Whereas the A-TRAC system is a much more aggressively tuned traction control for off-road situations (they equate it to the equivalent of front and read limited slips).

So the way I understand it to get a rig designed to be an entry level off-road machine and get the traction control system designed for off-road use I have to spend another $2k on other doodad that I could give a $hit about... Seams to me this would be a great thing to have as a stand alone option or at lest a package deal with the locker, sliders and A-TRAC. But then there I go making sense again, obviously this is the way for Toyota to make the most money...

On the trail the A-TRAC system is a great tool to have in the box along with a rear locker. On the Rubicon the FJ's A-TRAC proved to work especially well in off-camber situations where a locker would have pulled the vehicle sideways. The rear locker obviously had the advantage when a rear wheel was lifted. A-TRAC is definitely an aggressive traction control as opposed to some of the TC systems found in many of the "cute-utes" found on the road nowadays, which can dig you into a hole before even kicking in.
