I'm definitely suffering from this. I just blew the front passenger side speaker and I'm pretty sure it's because the amp is putting out way too much bass, and it's only happening when the engine is on. I'm hoping to not have to shell out +$400 to replace a factory amp, hopefully I can find a used one but have a couple of questions first that I was hoping to get answers on from anyone else who has already dealt with this.

1.) I've got the built in nav. I believe this means my only option is to replace the factory amp with another factory amp?

2.) it's only happening when the engine is on. I've seen a couple of posts on here where people mention cutting whichever wire it is that is telling the amp that the engine is running. Unfortunately no one has ever mentioned which wire this is. anyone know? this would be the ideal solution if it's that simple.

3.) It looks like it's part number 8620-0W060. Is that part number specific to the fixed version of the amp or does that part number also include the version with issues? If it does include both versions, is there some way I know when I'm searching used ones whether it's the fixed version or not?

Thanks,
Dan

I had this in my 2001 (In 2007, so my memory is a little vague). I just went and bought a new OEM. I don't recall there being a "fixed" version, it didn't seem like Toyota cared enough about the problem to change the amp. Look into the possibility that there was a certain component that an electronics shop might have been able to replace. I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to use an aftermarket amp, you might just have to combine some channels, and you'd have to fab something to mount it if you wanted it in the same place (under the PS seat, under the NAV CD drive). Tundras and Sequoias had the problem too, and most of the info I got was from their forums.

I could be wrong but I'm nearly positive that I read something on here that the head unit with the nav built in is somehow tied specially into that factory amp and it freaks out if you replace it with an aftermarket. if anyone could confirm that it would be great.

There was a TSB on it and toyota was doing replacements for people with a fixed version so they know about the issue and have corrected it. I just need to know how I can identify the fixed ones so that I don't waste time and money with a used one that is going to do the same thing.

You are probably right. The noise was driving me crazy, and I didn't want to rig up some mount that had to hold the amp and the nav drive, so I just ordered a new one from cDan.

All the OEM sites I just looked at said it wasn't available. There was this one on eBay for like $250:
edit: nevermind, ebay was offering it as a substitute, it was for a 2001-2007 Prius, maybe it would work.

I think the part number is 86280-0w060

Just curious of symptoms. Even when you reduce bass via the EQ you are still having way too much bass?

I ask because this past weekend I installed new component speakers all around and also installed a crossover. After install the bass from the front speakers was way too much, so much so that I am going to need to put the OEM speakers back in. Coming across this post made me wonder if possibly the amp died coincidentally. I'll know pretty quick once I put the OEM speakers back in but wanted to ask. For me, even with the bass turned all the down or near the bottom I get this bass drone and it is very annoying.

Its basically way too much bass. Even with the bass dialed all the way down to -5 or -6 or whatever the lowest is it's still way too much. And it only does this with the engine running.

I think I'll confirm with cruiser dan but my local toyota parts shop just told me that the app is discontinued and can't be purchased new anymore. The correct part # is 86280-0w060 (this should be the fixed part number) and any vehicle produced after May 25th 2001 will have the fixed amp.

cruiser dan has confirmed for me that these are no longer available from the dealer. the part # that has the fix is #86280-0W060-C.
